Everything that you need to know about Nolan Ryan:

Ryan had an interesting nickname:

Ryan was given the nickname the Ryan Express.

Ryan played professional baseball for 27 years.

One of the reasons why Ryan is a baseball legend is that he played professional baseball for a whopping 27 years. A feat which not many professional baseball players achieve. In fact, Ryan actually played in MLB games in four different decades. In the history of MLB only 29 players, including Ryan have achieved this incredible milestone. When Ryan debuted in the MLB he played for the New York Mets and when he played his final game he played for the Texas Rangers.

During his career Ryan pitched for four famous MLB teams.

During his 27 year MLB career Ryan pitched for the New York Mets, the California Angels, the Houston Astros and the Texas Rangers. Three of the teams which Ryan played for retired his number after he retired. The Los Angeles Angels retired his number 30, while the Houston Astros and the Texas Angels both retired the number 34 in order to celebrate Ryan’s success with their clubs.

He routinely pitched balls over 100 miles per hour:

One reason why Ryan’s skills as a pitcher were so sought after is that he routinely pitched balls over 100 miles per hour.

He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

In 1999 Ryan was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. At the time of induction Ryan was only the fifth pitcher to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Ryan also was inducted into the Angels Hall of Fame, the Houston Astros Hall of Fame and the Texas Rangers Hall of Fame.

He won a World Series in 1969:

Ryan won his first and only World Series title in 1969.

He is an 8 time All Star:

Ryan was named an MLB All Star on 8 seperate occasions. He was named an All Star in 1972, 1973, 1975, 1977, 1979, 1981, 1985 and 1989.

How many no hitters Nolan Ryan:

Nolan Ryan achieved 7 no hitters. Three more no hitters than any other pitcher in MLB history.

Ryan’s children also have a love for baseball:

Ryan has three children with his wife Ruth Holdorff, who has unfortunately passed away. Ryan and Holdorff had three children together Reid, Reese and Wendy. Both of their sons Reid and Reese followed in their father’s footsteps by playing as pitchers. Both brothers were pitchers for the TCU Horned Frogs, while Reid also had a brief professional career as a pitcher in the minor leagues. While neither brother reached the level of success as their father in 2003 Reid was named the president of the Houston Astros. One of the clubs that his father had pitched for.
