Lou Piniella: Player Profile

Piniella was born and raised in Florida:

Piniella was born in Tampa, Florida on the 28th of August, 1943. Piniella’s parents both boast Spanish heritage.

Piniella played professional MLB for 20 years:

Lou Piniella made his MLB debut for the Baltimore Orioles on the 4th of September, 1964. Piniella spent 20 years of his life playing professional baseball and officially retired on the 16th of June, 1984. At the time Piniella played for one of the strongest teams in the league, the New York Yankees.

He played for a wide variety of MLB teams:

During his professional MLB career, Piniella played for the New York Yankees, the Kansas City Royals, the Cleveland Indians and the Baltimore Orioles.

Lou Piniella stats:

Piniella boasted a batting average of .291 and hit 201 home runs during his career.

Following his retirement Piniella managed a handful of MLB teams:

Once he retired from MLB Piniella managed his former team, the New York Yankees. As well as the Cincinnati Reds, the Seattle Mariners, the Tampa Bay Devils and the Chicago Cubs. Piniella was a successful manager and won the Manager of the Year award in 1995, 2001 and 2008.

Piniella also served as a coach for the New York Yankees:

From 1984-1985 Piniella served as the coach for the New York Yankees. Yes, Piniella played for the New York Yankees and then managed and coached his former team.

Piniella was named an All Star:

In 1972, Piniella was named an official MLB All Star.

Piniella won 3 World Series titles:

Piniella won 3 World Series titles in 1977, 1978 and 1990.

He was inducted into the Seattle Mariners Hall of Fame:

While he was best known for playing for the New York Yankees, Piniella was also inducted into the Seattle Mariners Hall of Fame. Unfortunately Piniella has not been inducted to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Piniella has yet to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame:

Although he was nominated for election to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2016 and 2018. The closest Piniella got to being inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame was in 2018 when he received 11 of the 12 votes which he needed to be inducted to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Piniella has been married to his wife Anita since 1967 and the pair share three children together.

Piniella suffered from a mini stroke:

In June 2017, Piniella suffered a mini stroke. However, thankfully Piniella quickly recovered and was able to continue working as a senior advisor for the Cincinnati Reds in 2018.

Piniella had a cameo in a film:

If you watch the 1994 film “Little Big League”, you may notice Lou Piniella’s cameo.
