Outdoor Activity Options on Long Island

June 15, 2022 by Danny Leave a Comment

Long Island sits southeast of New York and is comprised of Kings, Queen, Nassau, and Suffolk Counties. Huntington and Oyster Bay were recently named two of the 50 best places to live in the country.

Long Island experiences all four seasons, but as you look for Long Island houses for sale you will see there’s something to do whether it’s hot or cold outside.

Visit a Park

There are many parks in Long Island: Belmont Lake State Park, Bethpage State Park, Eisenhower Park,

Hempstead Lake State Park, and Massapequa Preserve.

Eisenhower Park is one of the largest public spaces in the New York metropolitan area and is bigger than Central Park in neighboring Manhattan. It has golfing, a swimming facility, batting cages, playgrounds, and many other activities for both children and adults.

Bethpage has cross country skiing trails to keep you busy in winter, and world-class golf courses for those who like to hit the links in summer. Hempstead has horseback riding trails, a historic hand-carved wooden carousel, and three ponds for fishing.

If you like water sports, Belmont Lake rents out kayaks and rowboats. If you’re more inclined to stay on land, try one of its paths for horseback riding.

Hit The Beach

Jones Beach, Long Beach Boardwalk, Robert Moses State Park, and Tobay Beach are prime beach spots in Long Island.

Jones Beach is famous for its white sand beaches that stretch nearly seven miles. Six million people visit the park each year and enjoy the boardwalk, WildPlay Adventure Park, and the Northwell Health Theatre.

Surfing and surf-fishing are popular activities at Robert Moses, which has a Pitch & Putt Golf Course, landmark Water Tower, and many places to fish and crab.

Tobay Bay in Oyster Beach has waterfront dining, a state-of-the-art spray park, and a seasonal marina with room for over 150 boats.

See the Fire Island Lighthouse

Located in the Robert Moses State Park, this lighthouse offers a panoramic view of the seashore after you trek the 182 steps to the top. It’s the tallest lighthouse on Long Island, and on a clear day you can spot Manhattan from it.

Get Your Garden On

The 400-acre Planting Fields Arboretum is a lush garden with greenhouses and historic estates.

This is a great spot to take photos, and the scenery gets even better in the fall when the leaves make the trees look like they’re aflame.

Frolic in the Flowers

Long Island is home to the lavender and sunflower fields, stunning seas of flowers.

There are two locations from Lavender by the Bay Farm: Calverton and East Marion. Visit in the first two weeks of July to see the French lavender, or swing by in mid-June or mid-September to see the English lavender.

Mid-July to August is the perfect time to see the sunflower fields. Water drinker Farm has fields of yellow, as well as a tulip festival in the spring and a pumpkin patch in the fall.

Go Sledding

Beth Page Park has ideal hills for sledding when a good coat of snow falls on the ground. Bald Hill is the highest point on the island and provides high speed sledding thrills for those who are brave enough.
