When Al Leiter Almost Got Linked To Babe Ruth

Raise your hand if you remember May 31, 1988.

That was the game where Neil Allen came within 3 hits of pulling an Ernie Shore. Well, except that Leiter gave up a hit...sure.

Now, this would be a good one for Yankees Classics, no?

I was just a few weeks shy of finishing up 7th grade and vaguely remember this game.

Looking at the box score is a nice trip down memory lane: Joel Skinner, Claudell Washington, Gary Ward, Pags...

Notice that the Yanks were in first place by 2.5 games over Cleveland. Pity Boston caught up and won the division...

As I've said before, the folks who decide what to show on Yankee Classics might want to throw a changeup in there from time to time. Besides the World Series of 1977 and 2001 it would be nice to see some of the good games from the 80's or even the good things that happened under Buck Showalter in 1993, 1994 and 1995.

They had a pretty rough august, IIRC.

Talk about a trip down memory lane, check out that pitching staff. Tommy John, Ron Guidry, Rick Rhoden were on their last legs. Charlie Hudson reverting back to form as an erratic swingman.

Good hitting, lousy pitching that squad had.
