Giambi: Yanks Playing Like Old Men
This quote from Jason Giambi yesterday is getting a lot of play in blog-land; so, I thought I would add to the party:
"You've got the young kids (on the Royals) running around like maniacs," Jason Giambi said, "and we're playing like a bunch of old men right now."
Last time I checked, the Yankees only have two non-pitchers on their team who are age 35 or older: Jorge Posada (who didn't play last night) and Jason Giambi.
So, if Jason is concerned about the Yankees being more youthful, maybe he should retire now and then the team can replace him with someone like Shelley Duncan or Brett Gardner? If Giambi were to express an interest to retire, today, I'm sure that the Yankees would be willing to discuss some settlement terms on the remainder of his contract to make it work for both him and the team.

Amen, Steve. Come to some sort of settlement, buy him out for half of the remaining money left on his contract, and be done with him.
As mentioned in a previous post, Matsui really needs to be the everyday DH. Giambi is just taking up a roster spot.

Or we could just take Giambi, Mussina, Cashman and Hughes and burn them at the stake so you have less aggravation in your life, Steve.
I didn't know a truthful statement about your team -- since they have been sleepwalking all year -- should occasion an abrupt retirement.

If the Yankees had better offensive alternatives in the minors than Duncan and Gardner, who don't project to be more than league average at best, they would be on the team right now. In fact, that's the part of the problem. Their top position prospects are a year or so away, unless A-Jack continues his quick assent.
And btw, Matsui should never play the OF anymore, especially when a flyball pitcher, like IPK, is scheduled to start. Giradi blew that one.

Count me in the "good riddance, Jason" corner. For a guy who is supposed to be a great hitter, he doesn't hit that much anymore. He's always hurt and he can't play the field with any regularity (injuries) or with any consistency (he's just as likely to make a good play as he is to botch the easy one (see April 2nd)).
Giambi's got a full no-trade clause which pretty much means he can't be traded since he'd ask for a contract extension. But I fully support the Yankees buying him out for a reasonable sum, thanking him for those two solo shots off Pedro in the 2003 ALCS and pretending that the rest of the time he was here never happened.
It's pretty amusing to me that Giambi, of all people, talks about the team playing like old men. Jason, you can't even walk 10 feet without pulling something...

Giambi led the team in OPS in 2002 (156 games), 2003 (156 games) and 2006 (139 games). In 2005, his 161 OPS+ (in 139 games) was eclipsed only by ARod's OPS+ of 173 (which got him the AL MVP.)
Yes, it's been frustrating to watch him the last couple of years and he's not the most efficient use of a roster spot, especially when he's not hitting. But let's not get crazy here and forget what Giambi has done while in pinstripes.

Of course he was productive in 2002 and 2003 and I appreciated his back-from-the-dead season in 2005.
My "solo shots off Pedro" comment was meant as tongue in cheek but I defend the spirit of the comment as having validity. He's no longer a regular player. He's always hurt. He can't field his position. And although he's been productive in the past, his offense has been pretty spotty recently.

FWIW, Girardi just said on M and the MD that Giambi is just missing pitches by a fraction.

I was always hard on Torre, and I guess it's time to start questioning Joe a bit, too, since he's now made a few questionable decisions. Tonight, for instance, he's sitting Abreu against the lefty and replacing him with... another lefty, Matsui, who's a complete butcher in the field. I don't think Matsui is a good enough hitter at this point to give back what he takes away in the field. And since they jumped the gun and sent Shelley to AAA, they don't have him tonight to play against the lefty. Couldn't they have kept Betemit at short for two more games? I also think it makes no sense to have Betemit on the team if you can't play him at short when Jeter goes down with an injury.
Tonight's lineup is a freaky nightmare, with Melky batting second, Molina ahead of Cano and Ensberg starting at first base.

Fair enough.
