The Case For Ross Ohlendorf
Here are the results of Ross Ohlendorf's seven outings, this spring, to date, with totals on the last line:

For those scoring at home, that's an ERA of 1.36 - but, more importantly, so far in games, Ross has thrown 80% of his pitches for strikes.
It's starting to look like Ohlendorf may have won a spot on this team. By the way, is it just me, or, does Ross sort of look like a certain former Yankee whose name also starts with an "O"?

the 2 HRs in just 6.2 ip worries me, especially for a groundball pitcher. the 6 Ks: 1 bb is promising though.

they look like pretty small sample sizes but im liking the 80% for strikes. That means he knows the strike zone and isnt going to pussy foot around batters. But the hrs are coming when he has multiple hit innings so I think that might indicate some issues when people get on base. Again, small sample size in ST. Probably not the best place to statistically judge bullpen pitchers.

When Ohlendorff makes the staff, and he will, it will open the door to other strong young arms making the relief staff, and maybe the Yanks will then stop the insanity of paying free agent setup relievers $4-$6 million per year for several years once and for all.
I realize Cashman avoided that this past winter, but we need to have it succeed, so they stop it forever.
