Heyman: Lohse Moose Insurance?
From Jon Heyman today -
Mike Mussina said his recent spring pasting is no cause for alarm. But scouts aren't so sure. They saw a fastball in name only, down from the high 80s to the mid or even low 80s and a continuing belief that he's nearing the end.
The Yankees would be better off keeping Joba Chamberlain in the pen, which would keep their fantastic late-game combo intact. But to do that, they'll need not only youngsters Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy to come through, but also Mussina to remain viable. Or they'll need to look into the free-agent market, which is a lot better then one might suspect at this point. They could sign Kyle Lohse, who's still available. Or if they don't mind waiting, they could try for Freddy Garcia, a past ace who's hoping to be back from shoulder trouble by midsummer.
Kyle Lohse? Man, that rings a bell. Did you know that the Phillies went 9-2 in the 11 games that Lohse started for them last year from August 2nd through September 26th? Granted, his ERA was 4.84 in those 11 starts - but, at least he kept his team in those important games.
But, who needs a Loshe in the wings when you've got Kei Igawa ready to step into the rotation when needed? (Yes, my tongue is firmly placed in my cheek when I say this.)

I'm more surprised the Yanks didn't move to sign the fatso formerly known as Bartolo Colon. Not that I'll mind watching A-Rod bomb him as a member of the Red Sox, but it would've been a cheap insurance policy. Lohse will cost too much money and his upside is basically nil.

I'd be willing to take a flyer on anyone if they have anything left. I think Boston giving Bartolo Colon a look is quite shrewd.
FWIW, I wouldn't mind Igawa spot starting. If Moose is out, I suspect Rasner, Kartsens, et al will get starts in his place.
The pitching couldn't implode 5 years in a row, could it?

At this point, with teams almost a month into S.T., for pitchers, I would bet that someone could get Lohse for a song - and probably a one-year deal.

I'd definately take a look @ Freddy Garcia.

Garcia, this season, is like Dotel was in 2006. By the time he MAY be able to help, the season will be long gone.

First off, Moose has made only ONE spring start. He hasn't been given a chance to do anything yet.
Secondly, guys like Jeff Marquez, Alan Horne, Darrell Rasner and Steven White can give the Yanks whatever suckiness Lohse gives them for a fraction of the cost. This is just Heyman filling column space more than anything.

Have you backed off signing him to a four year deal?

Agreed. Still it couldn't hurt to have him around for 2009.

In my experience, just because Heyman mentions a potential move doesn't mean that the team is actually considering it either. He tends to present what he feels is logical as a real option for the team when in reality its possible (or i think in this case, i would bet, likely unless lohse' price has come way down in dollars and years) that the team would not be interested in the move at all. I just think he tends to mix his jobs as reporter and pundit without always being clear about where one ends and the other begins.

I agree with Mike that Cash (correctly) would rather rely on young pitchers in the system to provide depth.

Personally, when he was looking for a multi-year deal, I would have given him one - as long as it did not contain a no-trade clause? Now, considering his leverage - which is almost nill - I don't see the need to offer him more than one year.

Puh-lease, a 4.7 ERA with a WHIP around 1.5 in the NL???? Yeah, that will translate real real well to the AL East. Moose can do just about that this year and basically did last year save for July and August. Waste. Of. Money.

and it's not like his ERA was only up because of the band box in Philly... he actually had a GOOD era at home. and was atrocious on the road

depth is good thing Steve, but what about this..
let's say you sign him... and at the start of the season Moose / Phil / IPK actually does... well (gasp... !!!) what do you do with Lohse? use his weak shit in the bullpen? trading can't happen instantly you know. and there is no way in hell you option a guy like IPK or Hughes down if they are not doing very poorly... espically not to make room from Kyle freaking Lohse.

The Yanks have plenty of options in the minors, in case Moose implodes.
I'd rather have the Yanks sign Freddy Garcia, instead of Kyle Lohse.
