Charleston RiverDogs

Is it just me, or, are the Charleston RiverDogs the one team in the Yankees chain that Yankees fans never seem to want to talk about? Why is that?

I guess maybe anytime you hear a great prospect he is in the AAA Scranton or AA Trenton or Tampa. And the Riverdogs great prospects tend not to stay there too long and move to AAA or AA.

I heard Dellin Bentances is going to be in Charleston hope he can look good there.

Well, I think the hardest thing is that the Riverdogs used to be the Tampa Bay Devil Rays franchise (did anyone read the article about the Rays fining people for using their old name?). I went to college down in Charleston and, while it was a fun place to drink and hang out with your friends, the Devil Rays (you're allowed to use it in the historical context) weren't any good. I think they have a great stadium down there and Mike Veeck (Bill Veeck's son, I believe) does a good job getting people in the seats. Charleston is a beautiful city and a fun place for a ballgame. Wish it got more love.

I think it must be because they are so far away from the other organizational teams. I live in Charleston and I personally am excited about the upcoming season. The stadium here is great. Right on the Ashley river that backs up to the sweet grass marsh. Cheap tickets and beer, and tons of fan support. There's always a solid crowd on weeknights and a packed house on the weekends.

This season the team is slated to have Jesus Montero, Carmen Angelini, Abe Almonte, Brandon Laird, possibly Brandon Suttle, possibly Austin Romine, Prylis Cirello, Justin Snyder, Jose Pirela in the field.

Adam Olbrychowski, Wilkins DeLaRosa, Manny Barreda, Dellin Betances, Zack McCallister, and possibly Jairo Heredia on the pitching staff.

Should be a good solid season hitting and pitching wise for Charleston.

Their logo isn't as cool looking as Trenton's?

I agree with elwundnjake on the Devil Rays aspect. The local AAA team is the Durham Bulls, and if they weren't such a beloved franchise locally (and without the gorgeous stadium), I think they'd be in a similar boat.

I totally get the Charleston love, BTW. I visited for the first time last year, and loved it. We're going to Folly Beach this year and will probably stop by Charleston as well.

Mr. Furious,

Check out Taco Boy on the main road at Folly. Great Margaritas and fish tacos.
