Are There Sox Fans In Mets Clothing?
From Ben Shpigel of the Times -
The Mets and the Red Sox, despite their memorable tussle in the 1986 World Series, are unofficial allies. They share a common enemy in the Yankees, whose senior vice president, Hank Steinbrenner, engaged in some kind-of, sort-of, not-really-unfriendly verbal jousting a week ago with Boston’s principal owner, John Henry, when Steinbrenner questioned the popularity of Red Sox Nation.
I have a few friends who are Mets fans who say that the Red Sox are their "second favorite team" or their "favorite A.L. team" - and they swear it has nothing to do with the Yankees. Sure.
It's funny, in Yankeeland, it doesn't work the other way. You don't see a lot of Yankees fans saying that the Phillies, Braves, or Cardinals (or whoever) are their second favorite team, etc.
What do you think? Are fans of the Mets, based on your experience, also often rooting for the Red Sox too? What's your thoughts on that?

You're absolutely right. They're allied in their inferiority complexes. Me, I don't mind the Mets. I hope they succeed. I hope Willie Randolph succeeds. But Mets fans, boy, the end of the regular season last year was a real treat, after what Yankee fans had been treated to earlier in the season.

The Mets are trash. I can't stand some of their fans. Last year during the middle of the season all I heard was how the Mets are the "new" team in New York and how the Yankees are now "second rate" compared to the Yankees. Yea, that last all of one month maybe.
I rooted somewhat for the Rockies last year in the World Series I'll admit, but everyone knew that wasn't going to happen.

i'll even take it a step higher. i not only agree with mets fans loving the sox because of their hatred of the yankees, but every phillies fan i know loves the red sox because they not only hate the mets, but everything about new york baseball.

When you watch a Yankees game in a bar, there are cheers for the Yanks and cheers (from Mets fans) for any opponent, including the Sux.
When you watch a Mets game in a bar, there are cheers for the Mets and silence for the opponent, because Yankees fans do not care.

This is nothing new. I vividly remember rooting passionately for the Red Sox to beat the Mets in '86, and I knew several Yankees fans doing the same. Lupica and the media had already anointed them "NY's team" and I prayed for someone to take them down. In '96 Boston wasn't the Yanks' main rival. Atlanta was "America's team" thanks to TBS, and I remember how much more thrilling it was to take them down. When you're the big boys on the block you get the target. Met fans know NY has been Yankee town for a long time, and they pray for any one to knock the Yanks down a peg.

I live in the Albany area and the Mets fans I encounter for the most part have this huge hate for the Yankees. I honestly would say 9 out of 10, believe it or not. To the point where I almost question whether they are Met fans. It's bizzare.
It's funny, being 32 years old, I remember Reggie, Goose, Nettles, etc, but I didn't get to enjoy the World Series wins of the late 70's and by the time I got to an age where it was something I recognized, the Mets of Strawberry, Hernandez and Gooden were the team, but I didn't hate them, I was jealous, but never expressed it to root against them or even felt that I should. 96 was the first time I "experienced" the Yankees winning a World Series and the next few years were a great ride.
The Met fan really showed this hate to me during the 99 Series, when after they lost a tough one to Atlanta in NLCS, they were all rooting for the Braves. Very bizarre.
On the other hand, the Sox fans I know are pretty good baseball fans, who don't like the Yankees, but view it more as the obstacle to their success, rather than a hate. Maybe it's the sample of people I know.

I completely agree, but here's a catch. One of my good friends is a lifelong Mets fan, and he was always very pro-Red Sox and anti-Yankee. But that all changed back in 2006 when the Mets played the Sox in Boston. My friends went to that entire series, and he came back a Red Sox hater, and while he still isn't pro-Yankee, he now always roots for them to beat the Sox. He was abused mercilessly up in Fenway. He said the Sox fans were such awful people that he could not bring himself to root for the Red Sox ever again. So I think that if Met fans had any clue how bad Sox fans are, they'd change their mind.
