Rocker: A-Rod Was Told How To Use PEDs
Via the AP:
John Rocker claims he flunked a drug test ordered by Major League Baseball in 2000 and that he, Alex Rodriguez and other Texas Rangers were advised by management and union doctors following a spring training lecture on how to effectively use steroids.
Rocker was suspended for the first 14 days of the 2000 season by Selig for making racial and ethnic remarks the commissioner deemed insensitive. The penalty, originally set to cover 28 days, was reduced by an arbitrator following a grievance.
Rocker said that doctors from management and the players' association, following a spring training talk with the Texas Rangers about steroids and other topics, pulled himself, A-Rod, Rafael Palmeiro and Ivan Rodriguez aside. Rocker was with the Rangers in 2002.
I guess Juan Gonzalez was out sick that day. Well, at least, now, we know what the first question will be (from the media) for Alex when he reports to Tampa. Or, is it possible that people will realize the source on this one and leave A-Rod alone?
File that question under: Odds, Between Slim and None.
More on this story can be found in the Daily News.

Good 'ol John Rocker. I wonder if he's still on "Pros vs Joe's".
Anyway, in addition to Andy Pettitte's involvement with the Mitchell Report, we have yet another story involving A-Rod. People will probably find A-Rod guilty before he's proven innocence. Given that the Radomskis and McNamees of the world are believed to be speaking the gospel, I guess we should believe John Rocker.
I do think Selig knew about steroids being in the sport though, if that isn't obvious.

I cannot believe this is becoming a story about A-Rod. It's amazing. Are they really going boil down his rant to "A-Rod was told how to use steroids!"? Simply stunning.
Even if Rocker's wild claims are true, it still doesn't mean A-Rod did anything, and any suggestion that A-Rod did 'roids should come with this preface: he's been a world-beater since he was a teen and was bench-pressing 400 pounds at 17. If you take a look at A-Rod's development since he was young, I think what you find is this: people use steroids to BECOME A-Rod; he didn't need to take them to achieve some higher place -- he is just naturally there.
And anyway, the idea that someone from baseball told them they "wouldn't get hurt" by doing steroids in a certain way is pure fantasy. If he told them, then he probably told others -- and with the crazy steroid controversy swirling, such a thing would have gotten out. Hell, Raffy would have jumped all over that when he was trying to scrub his image. Rocker is a loser who needs to go away. Rocker suggested Selig should kill himself -- I think Rocker should take that suggestion and take Canceso with him.

By the way, Steve, you might want to create a post about an article by the always hysteria-prone Buster Onley who claims Pettitte will be behind the other pitchers prep-wise and that the Yankees (to paraphrase) are "gravely concerned" -- concerned enough that Onley suggests they would pick up a pitcher.
I find it hard to believe Pettitte was sitting on his couch eating donuts just because he had to testify. I also find it hard to believe, as the article suggests, that Pettitte didn't work out because he wasn't with Roger and NcNamee this off-season. Pitchers and catchers are just now reporting. How far behind can he be?

A smart guy said this ~7 days ago... Watch out MLB, Selig made a huge mistake naming names....
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
If only freaking MLB had followed that approach this mess wouldn't be nearly as bad and baseball would be moving forward. They really screwed the pooch when they allowed the Mitchell report to tar and feather some people and not lay a glove on others. Knowing the situation they should have just come out and said, "Look, we had a big, big problem. Worse than we thought. We can't be sure that we know all, or even most, of the guys involved, so we are not naming names, but we are instituting a super rigorous testing program to make sure it's out of the game for good. If the players union wants to fight us on this, then we'll release names." They'd have gotten ripped up in the press for white-washing the issue for a while, but they would have set the stage to quickly put this behind them. What happens if one or more of the named players starts saying "My team gave it to me", or "My team knew all the time what was going on." Bud Selig and the boys made a huge mistake by giving out the details of what they knew to be an incomplete and therefore fatally flawed investigation.

#15,
This was not a fatally flawed investigation in the eyes of George and Bud. They both accomplished exactly what they wanted, to stain the Yankees most recent dynasty. And nobody will ever question the bias of Mitchell the way they do the senators who 'dared' to get Clemens' autograph.

===============================================
Of course not. Don't forget, this is an even year and we don't like A-Rod in even years (2004, 2006). I'm sure we'd blame him for all the "corporate stiffs" that will be at the new Yankee Stadium next year, except that he'll be winning his third Yankee MVP in 2009.

You're right, Raf. I shouldn't be surprised. That's the way the media works, and nothing sells more papers than negative A-Rod stories.

Actually, the AP article's title is "Monday's Sports in Brief." I'm not giving the tabloids a pass just yet, but Steve is the one who came up with this title.

The "Daily News" article he links to (at the end) has the headline: "John Rocker: Union doctor told A-Rod, me how to use steroids."
