McNamee's Blue Dress Play
Via the Daily News -
Brian McNamee has turned over physical evidence to federal investigators that he believes will show Roger Clemens used performance-enhancing drugs, according to McNamee's lawyers.
"This is evidence the government has that we believe will corroborate Brian in every significant way," said McNamee lawyer Earl Ward.
McNamee's attorneys would not discuss the details of the evidence, but according to a source close to the former Yankee strength and conditioning coach, McNamee gave the Justice Department's BALCO investigators vials with traces of steroids and growth hormone, as well as blood-stained syringes and gauze pads that may contain the Rocket's DNA.
Justice Department officials have sent the evidence to a lab for testing, and if the materials do indeed contain traces of drugs and blood, prosecutors may attempt to get a court order for a DNA sample from Clemens.
McNamee plans to discuss the evidence with the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform tomorrow, when he is interviewed by the panel's attorneys in preparation for next Wednesday's congressional hearing on the challenges Clemens has raised about the Mitchell Report.
I just want to know how long until McNamee puts this stuff up for auction on eBay. That's got to be the next step, right?

IF this evidence is what it is purported to be, Clemens fell into a trap.

This seems kind of odd timing to provide this evidence. He McNamee had a plea deal to tell the whole truth, this evidence would have to have been disclosed to the feds. Further, Roger admitted that McNamee used needles (b12) on him. There is no way for this evidence to prove anything other than McNamee withheld evidence from the feds...

Let's get this straight, McNamee claims he has held, in his possession, with his unlimited access, steroids and the tools he used on Roger for ~ 7 years? No way evidence of this type stands up in a court of law. Now, in the cruel court of public opinion........ This guy is giving me the creeps. The blue dress could only have been stained by the chief sleaze. The better analogy would be Monica producing a cigar with Willy's fingerprints and her own DNA on it.

"Chief Sleazes" start unnecessary wars.
Why anyone cares who a person has consensual sex with his beyond me.
Other than that, good analogy.

Does this mean that McNamee didn't tell Mitchell about this evidence? Or that Mitchell didn't include it in his report, which featured purported conversations as key evidence against players?

What amazes me is how, if true, McNamee had been plotting to blackmail Clemens all along. This fact doesn't absolve Clemens in any way (and certainly makes him look bad) but it still amazes me how a nearly 10 year friendship was ultimately always destined to come down to McNamee holding something over Clemens's head. Wow, talk about not knowing who your friends are...

Why is it that every week we hear a statement from McNamee's lawyer that is supposed to add credibility to his client that strangely wasn't mentioned before? First, we heard him claim that McNamee had discussed Clemens' steroid use with a rep for his agent; then we heard that McNamee allegedly discussed it with Pettitte, and now this. This has been going on for nearly two months and we just now hear about it? Huh?
As far as him saving stuff with Clemens' blood on it, I have to agree with Steve on ebay. This guy would probably save what Roger left in his toilet to save as memorabilia. People have paid for used chewing gum and body parts so why not a couple syringes? My God.

If that's true, what has he been waiting for?
At this point, we lack sufficient fact make an intelligent assessment of what transpired, but an alternative explanation is that McNamee saved evidence (assuming arguendo that what he alleges can be established) to exculpate himself if he was ever made the fall guy by Clemens.

Which is what I meant by the term blackmail. Having something to hold over Clemens for the last 10 years is a pretty calculating move. Both guys come out looking bad in this. It's pretty disgusting...

But he isn't threatening Clemens, and at least according to what has been reported, he never has.
He seems to be using the material for defensive purposes.
Again, the facts are incomplete, but if he never had any intention of inculpating Clemens (that was my perception of his state of mind based on the secretly recorded tape that Clemens's attorney played), then I think it's plausible that his only purpose is and has been to stay out of jail once he become involved in the Mitchell investigation as a result of Radomski's testimony.
I agree that both guys look bad, but mostly because they conspired to break the rules of MLB while also violating the law.
I may, however, have to change my opinion of the utility of the Mitchell Report because by releasing the names of alleged users, a pandora's box of unintended consequences appears to have been opened that could lead to some very bad outcomes for way too many people.

Rich, this is just another day in the neverending battle on the war on drugs. Please forgive my rant here, but people's lives are destroyed almost daily because they had the gall to purchase medicinal marijuana, or because a SWAT team kicked down the wrong door when trying to take down a possible drug dealer. I mean for God's sakes, I can't even buy decent cold medicine off of a store shelf anymore, because if someone manages to get their hands on 50 packs of it, they can make meth. End rant.
There is absolutely no reason for tax dollars being wasted on this stuff. Let's get Congress back to the important things that they do best, like finding out if the Patriots cheated in football or building a multi-million dollar bridge to nowhere in Alaska.
