Jeter: PED Talk No Distraction To Team

Via the AP -

Yankees captain Derek Jeter doesn't think baseball's steroids controversy will be a major distraction when the team begins spring training next week.

"I think Andy is probably going to be facing a lot of questions,'' Jeter said Tuesday. "You know how it is in New York, there's always questions. It will probably die down after the first couple days when he talks to the media, addresses them and answers those questions. But in New York, there's always something every year. ... It might be a little different for Andy. Other than that, I don't think so.''

This, of course, assumes that no one in camp this year says something about it that will give the media something to play with for a while. If I'm General Joe, I would issue a gag order to everyone on this...from A-Rod down to Nick Green...and tell them to say as little as possible, at all times, on inquiries regarding PED usage.

If only freaking MLB had followed that approach this mess wouldn't be nearly as bad and baseball would be moving forward. They really screwed the pooch when they allowed the Mitchell report to tar and feather some people and not lay a glove on others. Knowing the situation they should have just come out and said, "Look, we had a big, big problem. Worse than we thought. We can't be sure that we know all, or even most, of the guys involved, so we are not naming names, but we are instituting a super rigorous testing program to make sure it's out of the game for good. If the players union wants to fight us on this, then we'll release names." They'd have gotten ripped up in the press for white-washing the issue for a while, but they would have set the stage to quickly put this behind them. What happens if one or more of the named players starts saying "My team gave it to me", or "My team knew all the time what was going on." Bud Selig and the boys made a huge mistake by giving out the details of what they knew to be an incomplete and therefore fatally flawed investigation.

What would have been a distraction is if Mattingly had been named manager, given his (soon to be ex) wife's problems.

Compared to what that would have been like, this is nothing.
