Cano In Shape, But Feels Secure Should He Get Hurt

Via Dom Amore:

Cano was one of the players, along with Bobby Abreu and Johnny Damon, the Yankees admonished to get into better shape during the offseason. Cano hired a personal trainer in the Dominican Republic.

"Every day, I drive an hour and work out from 10 to 2," Cano said. "Normally, I come to camp 212, 215 pounds. Right now, I'm about 206. ... I know they've complained in the past, but I don't think they will have any complaints now."

That's great news. However, in the same feature, we have this, from Robinson, about his new contract:

"Now I don't have to worry if something happens, if I get hurt," said Cano, who signed a four-year, $30 million contract with the Yankees Thursday. "I have security. I'll be honest with you, I know this hasn't happened before and I'm really happy they made me the first one."

Let's not forget that Cano missed 35 games in 2006 because of a hamstring issue. With his new "security," should Cano get hurt again, will Robinson be more likely to pull a Pavano and sit out longer than he may have, in the past, when he was playing for a contract? I hope this is not the case. But, when he says "Now I don't have to worry if something happens, if I get hurt. I have security." - well, you have to wonder about this, at least a tad.

Security in that context means that if he gets hurt or something like that, the team wont release him, or cut his salary, or try some other shenanigans.

Witness what Brad Halsey went through with the A's last season.

Steve, you are seriously the most negative person I've ever met. You think very little of people. Haven't you ever met someone not motivated by money and their own interests?

baileywalk - it might be the price I'm paying for being born and raised in New York. I take nothing for granted and question just about everything. Don't you find it a bit odd that his reaction to the new contract is "Now I don't have to worry if something happens, if I get hurt" and not something like "I appreciate the Yankees rewarding me and now it's time for me to provide them with all I have to give"?

I agree with Raf's assessment of the context. And Cano's English isn't at the level where he can explain his emotions as well as if he were speaking Spanish. We don't ever really "know" these players -- because most of us never get to meet them -- but I would be surprised if Cano did something like that. He seems to have an unbridled joy for this game -- I think his energy and enthusiasm (yeah, that's a bit of a cliche) spurns this team on at times.

By the way, there was a funny bit from Goose in that article that really made me laugh:

"I'll tell you, Robby, I'd have to part your hair right down the middle," Gossage said. "You'd have a little different outlook toward that at-bat. I'd give you happy feet."

One more thing about "security." You hear players mention it more often than not, but the fact is, by the time they reach free agency, they should be set for life.

I think "security" is just one of those buzzwords you hear every so often, and by this point it has become cliche'd.
