Borden: Hughes Ready For Big Time

In the rare chance that you missed it, Sam Borden has a nice feature on Phil Hughes today in the Journal News.

Sam is a good writer. It's nice to have him back in New York.

This is a great article. A real interesting look at Phil Hughes' progression as a person and pitcher. Thanks for the link Steve.

Boy, Sam really likes hyperbole. Anyway, the funniest thing in the article has to be this:

"After finishing his work that afternoon, however, Hughes went into the clubhouse to shower before joining his parents in the stands. As he was combing his hair, Jason Giambi - who is, perhaps, the only player in the world who puts gel into his hair before a game - offered Hughes some of his ever-present pomade, and Hughes excitedly accepted.

"'So then he comes back out and finds us at our seats, and we're all hugging and telling him how proud we are and my hand accidentally brushes up against his head,' Dori said, pausing for effect.

"'And he just freaks out! "Mom, what are you doing? Don't touch my hair! That's Giambi gel! That's Giambi gel!" It was like he was never going to wash it or something.'"

this was from Gammons on his blog today:

"From a former Yankees coach: "Hughes had a reputation for being a little lazy, but A-Rod was great with him. He really pushed Hughes in the weight room and helped him the way he helped Robinson Cano and Melky Cabrera. Alex relishes that role and his relationship with the young players, and they know no one outworks Alex."

Hughes should have stayed in shape like Clay Buchholz, lifting laptops and stuffing them in his jacket.

Poor choice of words from this "former Yankees coach" -- it's pretty tough to call these guys "lazy," when in fact they're probably just getting their true first taste of weight training, which hurts like hell at first and makes you reluctant to go back.
