21, Six Years Later, Now Out Of Moth Balls

Pete Abe is reporting that the Yankees have issued #21 to Morgan Ensberg this spring. That's going to make for some unhappy Yankees fans today.

very interesting. i'm not a die-hard paulie fan like most yankees fans, but i find it strange they hung on to it so long, only to give it to the likes of ensberg. not that i expected the yankees to retire 21 or anything...

just interesting.

Bingo. I'm unhappy about it.

If they were going to give out #21, it should have gone to a prospect with pedigree, not a journeyman who signed a minor league contract.

Count me among the unhappy. Rich has it right.

Pete's report says that "[o]ther than the retired numbers, the only numbers not assigned are 6, 51, 69, 98 and 99."

I totally get why 6 and 51 are being held out. But why not give Ensberg 69, 98, or 99? Rich is right, #21 (or 6 and 51, for that matter) should either be going out to the wall in LF or to Yankee prospects, not to bums.

Relax guys, he won't be a Yankee long enough for this to matter.

Plus you really need to get over it, it's just a number(that won't be retired), which has no effect on the game. Just because someone wears 23 in basketball doesn't mean they will be good, I could care less what number a guy wears, it's all about that NY on the front of the hat!

Maybe they asked O'Neill if it was alright, ever think of that?

he'll never play in a regular season game so who cares?

This is a disgrace!

Dump that WORTHLESS piece of garbage (I will NOT say his name)and issue Ensberg #45.

It would be one thing if they gave it to Hughes or Joba, but *Morgan Ensberg*?

Steve...I mean WW staff...you're right, this shouldn't have been allowed to happen, but hey, maybe Ensberg can turn into a summer miracle for us.

How do you know that for sure? It's not like Don Mattingly is in camp to play first base. You have Giambi (who we know is a DH), Shelley, Jason Lane, Betemit, and who knows how many other candidates. No one really stands out there. The best hitter in that group is Betemit, and he would probably make a nice platoon with Shelley, but would it really be shocking to see Ensberg make the team with a decent spring training? I don't think so. I'd rather have Shelley around, but Ensberg might snatch his job away.

Maybe, maybe not, but even so I couldn't see Pete Sheehy doing something like this.

I'm not up in arms outraged, or anything, I just find it odd.
