Hank's Daily Johan Update

From Kat O'Brien :

Yet nearly two months after the Yankees first engaged in trade talks with the Twins over Santana, the Minnesota ace is not off the Yankees' radar.

"There's definitely still a possibility," Yankees senior vice president Hank Steinbrenner said by phone yesterday afternoon.

Steinbrenner acknowledged that there are several concerns that give the Yankees pause about trading for Santana: The high level of players the Yankees would have to give up in a trade, the large and lengthy contract Santana would command (and the effect on the Yankees' payroll), and the fact that not everyone in the organization is thinking the same way.

It is believed that general partner Hal Steinbrenner (Hank's younger brother) and general manager Brian Cashman have reservations.

"The bottom line is, it's my decision," Hank Steinbrenner said, "but there's disagreement within the organization. I've got to keep everybody happy in the organization, including Brian ... That includes my partner, which is my brother."

"The payroll would just be out of this world this year," Steinbrenner said of potentially adding Santana, "but only for this year. When you've got to trade top young talent and pay a lot of money, it gets very risky."

If the Yankees do complete a trade for Santana, Steinbrenner said they would not go beyond a five-year contract extension (one that expires after the 2013 season).

"I wouldn't do it if it were a six- or seven-year contract," Steinbrenner said. "I wouldn't go past five, on an extension."

I'm happy to hear that bit about the years on the extension. Hank's right. Anything beyond five years is just asking for it.

The daily quote machine never quits. Someone needs to slip a sleeping pill into one of his Marlboro Red's. Get this guy to pass out and stop all the blathering.

I still don't see why the Yanks don't just wait this one out. The Twins will either have to trade Santana elsewhere at a major discount (something I can't imagine they'd want to do) or accept that he'll walk away in free agency. If he walks, the Yanks can sign him to stupid contract and still keep the kids. If Boston was really in this thing, wouldn't it have happened already?

"The bottom line is, it's my decision," - Okay, we get it. You're in charge. Good God.

Impeach Hank.

Hank loves to hear himself talk and the media keeps feeding this fool. At least he is competent enough to not exceed 5 years on a Santana extension.

If you are Santana why would you wave your no trade for 5 years when some team will give you seven when your a free agent?

If you believe Pete Abe's latest post [http://tinyurl.com/36b9qc] Hank's only got half the reigns...while Hal holds the other half. Seems like that would be good news for the "Hold on to Hughes" crowd.

What does Hank have for Kat O'Brien? Has he ever turned down one of her calls? She seems to call him every other day for a quote and he sings a song for her.

Enough already. Doesn't he see he's becoming a joke?

Hank must feel really inadequate when he looks at himself in the mirror.

Giving away prospects and all that money and years makes no sense to me. Not the formula for success.

Every poll I've seen has only 25% of the vote for definitely getting Santana... and it is mostly the 'you CAN'T win in the Post Season without an ACE!!!!!!' crowd.

Considering many fan are swayed by big names, and fewer are aware of the value of our minor leaguers, this is actually pretty amazing.

Phil Hughes is the Obama of the Yankees. We are not sure how good he will be, but we want him anyway! At this point, losing Phil, and/or to a lesser extent IPK, would ruin my winter.

Damn the torpedos! SAVE PHIL HUGHES!

Of course it has been proven time and time again that you can't win with an ace too.

the Dynasty Yanks didnt have an ace.

i hope we keep Hughes but I wouldn't be totally averse to trading Kennedy, Horne and Melky/Tabata/Ajax for Santana.

As has been mentioned elsewhere, Hank can say anything he likes. But if Cashman and Hal are against it? The trade won't happen.
