Clemens McNamee Phone Tape

I got to listen to the 17-minute recording, twice, on the drive home tonight (from work) - first on MLB Home Plate and then on ESPN News, both on X-M Radio.

Gotta say, I haven't witnessed a such a bizarre love-hate dynamic at work, like this one, since Tony Soprano choked the life out of Christopher Moltisanti.

Come to think of it, Debbie Clemens sort of reminds me of Carmela Soprano...

O.K, yeah, maybe that's crossing the line.

Anywho, Brian McNamee, Greg Anderson, Paul Janszen...where do ballplayers find these guys?

I have to say that Clemens is looking better and better in this thing. I believe he is slowly changing people's opinion and his testimony in front of Congress might be the deciding factor. If he comes out and answers all their questions with authority and doesnt hem and haw his way through it, I believe that people will ultimately take his side since there appears to be no way to get the truth either way.

I think Clemens is looking worse and worse. Playing that tape with McNamee was the nail in the coffin because McNamee came across as a guy who betrayed a friend by telling the truth.

The whole thing is just totally bizarre and sad. I can't go along with McNamee as the poor guy with the dying son who had to sell out his friend...he's been shady for way too long. His history is extremely checkered, and he comes across as opportunistic, calculating, and untrustworthy.

Not that Clemens is exactly looking great in all this. But he's definitely going down swinging, though I agree with those who say he's really not going to change the judgement of most people out there, pro or con. Most people have already made up their mind on him.

The old line was that Clemens was the "Texas Con Man." While I'm leaning towards his denials, I still have no idea. There's no solid proof either way. If he did, it's my belief that they helped him very little. Anyway, it's my opinion that we're seeing what happens when the so-called Texas Con Man meets a real con man. McNamee is one of those people that attaches himself to a celebrity and sucks for all it's worth. There's no doubt that he knew he was being taped or possibly wire tapped on that call, so take everything you hear with a huge grain of salt. Clemens knew he was being recorded, obviously, and was coached throughout. I don't even know why they chose to play that thing, because it was far from a real phone call.

McNamee is a con. Period. Nothing I've seen from the guy adds up. I agree with Max's take on McNamee, and his son being sick, while tragic as it always is with kids, is just another chip for him to play.

I usually hate all these sideshow T.O., Kobe Bryant, Micheal Vick, ARod, Bobby Knight...BS ESPN "news" stories, but for some reason I can't stop watching this Clemens saga, it's exactly how you would expect Clemens to react, and I find it extremely entertaining.

As far as who is telling the truth, I don't think it's possible for anyone else to really know but I do think Clemens has helped himself so far but we will see how it plays out.

I always felt that Clemens might have taken something but since he is coming out with guns blazing maybe he is telling the truth, who knows. Either way there definitely isn't any substantial proof, it's just his word vs. McNamee.

Unbelievable.

I've found the only place on the Web where people actually think that Clemens is looking better and McNamee worse.

Unbelievable.

Oh how we've missed you Dan. Here's another place where Clemens' stock has improved: http://shysterball.blogspot.com/

Funny, unbelievable is the word that McNamee's lawyer used for his reason for not suing Clemens for the 60 Minutes interview. Depsite swearing to sue beforehand, he decided that Clemens' statements were so unbelievable that he couldn't sue now. Umm, OK.
