Scott Linebrink & Ron Mahay

From the Daily News -

Sources say the Yankees have interest in lefthander Ron Mahay, though the team had not extended the reliever an offer as of last night. The Yanks are also interested in righthanded reliever Scott Linebrink.

Linebrink peaked in 2004-2005. He's average now. Mahay is old - but, he's a converted outfielder. Plus, he's a lefty. I would take him for the right price on a one year deal. But, what are the odds of him signing a one-year deal?

I agree with you on Linebrink; he peaked and should only be signed at a below-market deal (fat chance of that happening, however).

I think history has shown that Brian Cashman is somewhat obsessed with Scott Linebrink.

I believe Linebrink also qualifies as a Type A free agent, meaning it would cost the Yankees a first-round pick to sign him.

Two middling middle relievers, both of whom would get lit up in the AL East - and cost a draft pick. Pass.

If I'm Cash I try to re-sign Vizcaino. At this stage, he's a known AL commodity/mediocrity and wouldn't cost a first round pick. As long as he isn't pitching every night and twice on Sundays, he should be fine.

I think the bigger question is, which is Cashman saving his bullets (IPK, Melky, Horne, Tabata, etc.) for: an innings eater for the upper portion of the rotation or a shutdown reliever. My guess is the former, as it'd be illogical to drop 55 mil. for the upcoming season on three free agents only to predicate your season on the vagaries of three rookie (though extremely talented) pitchers and the shell of Mike Mussina.

>> and cost a draft pick

Ron Mahay is a type B free agent. Atlanta will be compensated with a sandwich round pick, but it's not a pick the Yankees would have otherwise had - ergo, it does not 'cost' them a pick.
