Paul O’Neill To Join Girardi's Staff In The Future?

From George King -

Paul O'Neill, a very close friend of Girardi's, is interested in talking about a move from the broadcast booth to the field, but there may not be immediate room for O'Neill.

And, from Andrew Marchand the other day -

O'Neil told 1050 today that "he will probably talk to [Giardi] at some point" and that he "wouldn't rule out" returning to the Yankees' dugout as a coach.

Back when Paul O’Neill was featured on the YES Network’s “CenterStage” (with Michael Kay), and he was asked “Who is the one person he would want in a foxhole with him?,” Paul’s answer was “Joe Girardi.”

Not his dad, or one of his brothers, or his wife – Joe Girardi.

At the time, that really left an impression with me.

Girardi and O’Neill were teammates for just four seasons (1996 to 1999). But, obviously, there’s a strong relationship between the two.

I don’t think O’Neill will be joining the team this season, as a coach. However, based on all this, if Girardi is the manager again in 2009, it would not shock me to see Paul O’Neill to be added to his staff.

You really think there's a chance they fire Girardi after just one season? I mean sure, Hank seems to have inherited his father's personality, but they'd really throw Girardi out after one year? I really hope not. I hope the days of the revolving door are over.

Less than 1%. But, it's not zero - so, you can never assume.

Maybe Paul just meant that none of his brothers is good at chucking grenades...

Here we go again. I like Paul O'Neil. Good/great player for the Yankees. Good coach? Who the hell knows? Using the same rationale we used to realize that Girardi was a better option than Matttingly, this is not old timer's day. These are coaching positions on the Yankees staff that are charged with developing young players and keep veteran players operating at peak performance. The fact that Paul O'Neill played RF for the Yankees and is a nice guy doesn't (necessarily) qualify him for that position. Jeesh.

J nailed this one. The stakes are too high to bring in guys for the sake of nostalgia and/or because they "have hardware."

And, who knows - O'Neill might make a great coach or manager one day. But I'd prefer his proving ground to be in the minors.

I think if push came to shove, there's no way Paul would want to coach. He broadcasts, what, 10 games a yr? And then, most of the games are in the mid-west - close to home. Plus, the money coaches are paid is pocket money to him.

Kevin Long, a second year batting coach, just inked a deal for $1.2 million/3 years. Pocket money? I know the cost of living is a little lower in his part of Ohio but...pocket money?

Yes. Pocket money to Paul O'Neill. Not to me. But, yes to him.
