Matt Herges
I have a feeling that there's a chance we may see Matt Herges with the Yankees next season. He's a free agent and the Yankees could use the help in the pen.
This comment was left on the blog Bleed Cubbie Blue last year:
"Matt Herges, Marlins reliever, was on Boers and Bernstein today, being quizzed about what kind of manager Girardi was. According to Herges, everything bad that's been said about Girardi was a lie, he's the kind of man Matt aspires to be, he has integrity, he is neither too tough, nor too nice, he's like a dad, he uses tough love, Matt can't imagine that anyone wouldn't respond to Joe's style, Scott Olsen, the pitcher Girardi grabbed by the jersey during a Cubs game, would do anything for him, Joe's the best manager he ever played for, Ramirez and other slothful non-rookies would hustle for him because Cabrera used to dog it until Joe arrived (and was moved to tears by his departure), etc. And, this coronation was while Herges was ostensibly pulling his punches, as he didn't want to imply anything negative about the Marlins' organization"
Sounds like Herges would welcome a chance to play for General Joe again.
Matt Herges pitched pretty poor in 2004 and 2005. Other than that, he's not terrible. For the right price, I would take a one-year flier on him and use him for middle-innings work out of the pen. At the worst, he could be Ross Ohlendorf insurance if the rookie gets banged around during Spring Training.

Wow, I had no idea he was a free agent. I wrote on here a while back "it wouldn't be bad if [the Yankees] could find a Matt Herges lying around somewhere" while discussing the 'pen. Well, I guess they CAN find a Matt Herges -- the man himself.
Herges has had some decent and even very good years in his career, and he was excellent for the Rockies this year and especially in the playoffs (I recall a few heroics against the Sox).
Cash should definitely see what he wants and try to bring him in.

Totally different topic, but any thoughts on bringing in Sean Casey?

Great guy. Angel of a man.
But, no stick and slow as a mule.
Pass.

If you'd sign Sean Casey, you may as well just keep Doug Mientkiewicz. Plus, if A-Rod might stick around, I'd rather have his caddy than the Mayor of Cincy who couldn't even earn time at 1B in Detroit over Marcus Thames...
