Hank Stein: Joba, Hughes & Kennedy Are Staying

Via the AP:

Hank Steinbrenner was clear on what the New York Yankees won't do to get Miguel Cabrera. "It's pretty obvious which players we're not going to trade," the owner's son said Wednesday, before rattling off the team's most-prized young pitchers. "Chamberlain, Hughes and even Kennedy. Not for a position player."

Yeah, I know, Big Stein also once said that the Yankees could never trade Scott McGregor and Otto Velez because they were the family jewels...and they both were sent packing. But, I think that Mini-Stein really means what he's saying here.

I hope this is true. These guys must be off the table. If they want our Cabrera plus Horne or Sanchez or Brackman or Betances, that we can discuss. The others no way.

I'm sure Ian Kennedy is wondering if he should be encouraged or insulted. "Chamberlain, Hughes and even Kennedy." "EVEN Kennedy"? Ha, ha.

I know, with Pettitte possibly not coming back, that the Yanks need all the pitching they can get, but I wouldn't let Kennedy, as much as I like him, get in the way of getting a 24-year-old monster hitter like Cabrera. If the Marlins really would take Kennedy and Melky for him, you pull the trigger without hesitation.

But that won't happen, so it doesn't matter.

Hughes and Joba, on the other hand, should stay put.

Brackman cannot be traded at this time.

I'm happy to hear the sentiment from up top that Hughes/Chamberlain are considered nearly untouchable.

My only question is why Hank Steinbrenner is quoted in the newspaper every single day. Shouldn't these statements be coming from Cashman? I know Cashman echoes the sentiments but I do wish that Hank would stop talking for a while (even if he's not saying anything horrendous right now).

The problem I have with this is let's say 1 or even 2 of the starting rotation gets injured and there is no Pettitte or production from an Arod.Remember that period early last year when they were 14 plus games out, that will be a cakewalk compared to what might happen.Pitching is the most precious commodity in baseball this year and Cabrera is a monster hitter but a butcher in the field.Kennedy might give you 15 wins this year...who is going to better that:Igawa,Karstens,Rasner or Clippard?I don't think that's going to happen.

I truly wish people would show the respect that the Yankee ownership deserves by calling Hank and Hal Steinbrenner by their names rather than referring to them as "Mini-Stein" or "Baby Stein" or whatever the name du jour is. I find it incredibly annoying considering you dont see people calling Robert Kraft's son Jonathan Kraft who is the President of the Patriots "Mini-Kraft". Maybe it is only George Steinbrenner's children who are constantly insulted for daring to be the offspring of the owner who has brought the most championships in sports to his since he took over.
