Globe: Source Says Bosox Might Be A-Rod's 1st Choice
From the Boston Globe:
If Alex Rodriguez could handpick the team he plays for, Boston might well be No. 1 on his list. According to a source who has talked to Rodriguez recently, he'd love to play for the Sox because he thinks they can win multiple championships. Meanwhile, agent Scott Boras has been pleasantly surprised with the early interest in Rodriguez. "Several teams have expressed an interest and there have been a couple of surprise teams I never expected to hear from," he said. Boras would not reveal any names (one of the surprise teams is thought to be the Marlins). Asked whether A-Rod would be OK shifting to shortstop, Boras said, "I haven't really discussed that with Alex yet. I will if there's a need to." Whither the Yankees? "That's something I will keep between Brian Cashman and myself," Boras said. "I'm not making any more comments about the Yankees."
Hey, Alex was once willing to take a pay-cut to play in Boston, and, Mrs. A-Rod's family is from New England. So, maybe it's true that the Red Sox are his number one choice now? If Mike Lowell does leave Boston, maybe A-Rod and the Sox can have a love connection here?

I think Boras is trying to create a situation where both the Yankees and Boston are bidding for his services. I have a hard time believing Boston is his first choice given how they have treated him the last ciouple of years. This is a staement meant to entice Boston into the bidding which would then, in Boras' mind, bring the Yankees back into it.

To say nothing of the fact that this story conflicts with what a few friends of A-Rod have said about his desire to remain in New York. As we can plainly see, no one knows anything and reporters keep on talking about unnamed sources when they try to divine A-Rod's preference.
A-Rod doesn't prefer one city over another. He simply prefers the place that will afford him the chance to eclipse Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods as the highest paid athlete. Nothing wrong with that, but certainly not tied to one market or another.

I agree with yardisiak that this is a Boras marketing ploy. In terms of baseball and even payroll management (A-Rod replaces Manny after 2008), a Red Sox A-Rod match makes sense. But, the problem lies in the marketing. If the Red Sox are going to pay someone $300 million, it seems that they would want someone who was significantly more marketable than A-Rod. I just can't see the fan base and media up there ever fully embracing A-Rod.

A-Rod doesn't care about being "embraced" by the fans. He wants $$$$$$.
And Ted Williams & the Bosox fans never got along, so I don't see that as a problem.
But yeah, I don't trust anything come out of Boras' mouth.
