Girardi To Wear # 27
From Newsday -
Joe Torre wore number six as the Yankees' manager, Billy Martin number one, Casey Stengel number 37.
The Yankees hope that, someday, fans remember as easily that Joe Girardi -- who will try to lead the Yankees to its 27th World Series title -- wore number 27 as manager.
When Girardi gets formally introduced Thursday at Yankee Stadium, he will debut his number 27, a person familiar with the situation said.
For his Yankees debut in 1996, Girardi wore number 45, only to switch to 25 by season's end and hold onto it for the subsequent three seasons. Jason Giambi chose 25 in 2002, however, and in 2005, when Girardi served as Torre's bench coach, he wore 52.
Twenty-seven owns a rather undistinguished existence in Yankees lore. Pitcher Darrell Rasner wore it in 2007, and the most high-profile Yankees to wear 27 are Graeme Lloyd (1996-98), Rondell White (2002), Luis Sojo (during his brief 2003 comeback) and Kevin Brown (2004-05).
When I think "27," in terms of Yankees uniforms, I think Mel Hall and Butch Wynegar.
I was hoping that Joe was going to take # 11 (sort of a double Billy Martin) - - as it's a low number. But, # 27 is fine too. I do wonder if Joe will switch to # 25, next year, when Giambi is gone.

Girardi's the man - you can't tell me he didn't pick #27 to tie in with the World Series.
