Extra Inning Post-Season HRs Allowed
To date, Yankees pitchers have faced 245 batters during extra innings in a post-season game. And, only 6 of those 245 batters have hit a homerun in those chances. Here's the list:
Date Series Game Batter Team Allowed HR 10/06/57 WS 4 Eddie Mathews MLN Bob Grim 10/12/64 WS 5 Tim McCarver STL Pete Mikkelsen 10/04/95 ALDS 2 Ken Griffey SEA John Wetteland 10/22/03 WS 4 Alex Gonzalez FLA Jeff Weaver 10/06/04 ALDS 2 Torii Hunter MIN Tanyon Sturtze 10/17/04 ALCS 4 David Ortiz BOS Paul Quantrill
Would you agree, out of these six, that Alex Gonzalez is probably the least likely guy that you would expect to go yard in a spot like that?
Man, that one still stings.

Gonzalez had a little pop (18 in 2003), so it isn't surprising he went deep. It's not like Ozzie's HR back in '85, or even Dent's HR in '78.

His lifetime SLG %, at that time, was .389 - - - that's pretty bad.

I certainly do not disagee with that one still stinging, but..
Statistically speaking, Tim McCarver was even more unlikely than Alex Gonzalez to have taken one deep. In 5,529 Career ABs, The Mouth, had 97 Career HRs or 1/57 At Bats. Gonzalez thru the end of this season had 106 HRs in 4,002 Career ABs or 1/37.75 At Bats.
The other thing that strikes me is the pitchers that have surrendered the recent extra inning dingers - Jeff Weaver, Tanyon Sturtze and Paul Quantrill. Granted by the time you are in extra innings, you have often utilized the first couple bullpen options, but those were accidents waiting to happen...
