Bill James - "Jeter Vs. Everett"
Back on February 26, 2006, I did a review of The Fielding Bible that said the book included "an essay by Bill James entitled 'Jeter vs. Everett' - comparing the defensive skill of Derek Jeter to Adam Everett - that will probably be a work cited from this time until forever in assessing Jeter's defensive worth at shortstop."
Well, if you've never seen the essay, it's now available on-line at the Fielding Bible site. Click here to read it.

Sorry to hijack this, but some hilarious stuff from the Joe Torre press conference just now.
It's pretty obvious he has no idea who the players are on his own team. He must have taken this job without an ounce of research.
They asked him what free agents he hoped to bring in, and he said he had no idea -- him and the GM had not talked about it yet. They then asked him about the closer, and his answer was to say he "didn't know the NL." In other words, "I don't know anything about my closer except that he's Asian and that he's supposed to be pretty good."
It's clear that Torre wouldn't recognize Jonathan Broxton is Broxton stepped on him with one of his massive legs.
He's known he had this job for days -- he couldn't watch some film on his players? So it actually looked like he knew a little about them, and didn't have to answer every question with "I'm not real familiar with my own players"?
That's our Joe.

"...except that he's Asian".
OMG, you couldn't have made that up if you tried.
Joe, are things that bad at home that you needed a new job ASAP?

It's amazing how quickly $50 million goes. It's so hard to put food on your family these days.

Or maybe his wife's an incessant nag.
"Sorry honey, off to work again!"

Yeah that idiot Joe. You guys really think he has no idea what he has, or that he didn't want to use this lovefest to say anything to compromise existing players/management?
Come back to me when they're 10 games better than last year.

I don't know, I was impressed when Girardi said about Mo: "I don't know anything about my closer except that he's Panamanian and that he's supposed to be pretty good."
Also, Andy declined his option to return next year, for now. Hopefully he does decide to come back, as the door is still open.

Bill James is a stats geek and he is the bane of all scouts for this reasons.LOve or hate ,Jeter gives %125 when he plays. As James, intimates he doesn't see(scout) him all the time, but he can analyze him.Better to see such a workhorse and his intangibles, rather than his so-called stats.

Really? 125 percent? Damn, that's better than 100%! Math is hard :)
Honestly, the guys at firejoemorgan.com would love you. Absolute nonsense you're spewing.

Jakes, one quick note,I'm not a big Jeter fan BUT you can't deny that the guy plays hard or tries to everyday.BTW,James admits that he doesn't watch him everyday! You can't see someone's work ethic and effort when you're pouring over stats! If one looks at A-rod's numbers and you would say what a great player!Guess what that perception is far different when you see him everyday!Scouting is not nonsense, but some of "monkeyball" is!
