Lucchino: We're Not The Yankees

From the Washington Times back on October 17th:

With the New York Yankees out of the postseason, the Boston Red Sox have become the Goliath of this American League Championship Series.

It is not a position Red Sox owner Larry Lucchino is comfortable with.

He doesn't like being lumped with the Yankees under any circumstances, even though sometimes it seems like the Yankees and the Red Sox are in one division and the 28 other major league teams are in another when it comes to finances.

"Walk a mile in our shoes and see how different we think we are from the Yankees," Lucchino said. "They have the benefit of the largest market in the Western world. We have to compete with them, but they are tens of millions of dollars higher than us. It is inappropriate to lump us with them. It is the Yankees out there and 29 other teams in the next category. We want to be the little engine that could."

I have to remember this quote if A-Rod opts out and the Red Sox throw Alex bags full of money to sign him.

Well, you're not, so get over it. I have no problem with the way the Sox run their business/team, but don't pretend that you don't have a lot of advantages over the Royals and the Twins of the world either. That's just the way it is. The entire payroll argument is so tired anyway, just move on. But I guess it makes everyone feel a little better if the Yankees are the EVIL Empire and everyone who beats them can pretend to be Luke Skywalker nailing the target on the Death Star.

What did the other teams bid on Dice-K again? How about JD Drew? Julio Lugo? The Sox have overspent on a lot of players that only teams like the Yankees, Mets, and Dodgers could afford to do.

And yes, the Yankees are in the largest market, but it's funny that people conveniently forget that they share that market with the Mets, who aren't afraid to spend a little cash themselves.

Even Bill Simmons conceded the Red Sox were just like the Yankees (at least in those two vs. the other 28) after the Dice-K signing.
If even he's on board with being an empire, Lucchino is just fooling himself in pretending otherwise.

Exactly. But as long as "Uncle Bud" Selig is swapping spit with Red Sox ownership, no one will ever call Lucchino out on his ludicrous claims.

Lucchino is the moron whose Evil Empire comment was spun by buffoonish Boston fans. He & his cohorts are the biggest hypocrites in sports. In 3 seasons 75% of that ' special ' 2004 ' team, is no longer in a Boston uniform. How & why did that happen Lucchino?

There was a time I would've willingly tipped my hat to Boston. Not now they are disingenuous & perfidious. That ahole Lucchino has one thing I will certainly agree with--they are not the Yankees.

Because that team was old? Because if they still had the 2004 team they would have finished in last place? Is that a serious question?

Did you hear the comments by yankee ownership about boston recently? From tweedle dumb and tweedle dumber?

But you're right. They're not the yankees. For once, boston has their shit together while the yankees look like the keystone cops.

Up here in Toronto the Yankees and Red Sox are certainly lumped together - budgets, talent, visibility, number of hangers on Canadian fans. I know it dilutes the brand for them not to be the "scrappy underdogs" or whatever but it's clear that that ship has sailed.

Why, because we're in a bit of a transition?

The entire league was laughing at the Red Sox after they fired Grady Little in 2003, and look wha hoppen next.

Lucchino is trying to protect the Red Sox brand, this is an extremely planned out and calculated move.

They don't want to be idenitified as the "B-Yankees" so they're trying to maintain the underdog label despite being tens of millions of dollars in payroll higher than any other team in baseball-except the Yankees.
