I have no problem with the way the Sox run their business/team, but don't pretend that you don't have a lot of advantages over the Royals and the Twins of the world either. That's just the way it is. The entire payroll argument is so tired anyway, just move on. What did the other teams bid on Dice-K again? How about JD Drew? Julio Lugo? The Sox have overspent on a lot of players that only teams like the Yankees, Mets, and Dodgers could afford to do.

And yes, the Yankees are in the largest market, but it's funny that people conveniently forget that they share that market with the Mets, who aren't afraid to spend a little cash themselves.

Even Bill Simmons conceded the Red Sox were just like the Yankees (at least in those two vs. the other 28) after the Dice-K signing.

Up here in Toronto the Yankees and Red Sox are certainly lumped together - budgets, talent, visibility, number of hangers on Canadian fans. I know it dilutes the brand for them not to be the "scrappy underdogs" or whatever but it's clear that that ship has sailed.

Lucchino is trying to protect the Red Sox brand, this is an extremely planned out and calculated move.

They don't want to be idenitified as the "B-Yankees" so they're trying to maintain the underdog label despite being tens of millions of dollars in payroll higher than any other team in baseball-except the Yankees.
