Joba Chamberlain And Ian Kennedy's Wedding
The wedding is Saturday, at the Westborough Country Club in Kirkwood, Mo., the day before Game 3 of the ALDS.
Joba wants to go - it's an off-day. I think he should avoid it - to not tax himself before the game, with all the travel, etc.
I wonder how the Yankees will handle this situation?

Travel isn't that big a deal (MO -> NYC). Chamberlain's coming out the pen, so rest shouldn't be an issue.

What if it's a day game on Saturday? You really want him partying at a wedding, and then getting on a plane, the night before, or the morning of, a playoff game? Really, you're OK with that Raf?

The game on Sunday is at 6:30pm (Yankees got shafted on start times).

But now that I think about it, it's not too bad. I won't be up until the wee hours morning waiting for the game to end. And instead of having to take off for an afternoon Game 4 (if necessary), I only have to leave work early.

Is there reason to think that Joba is not responsible enough to keep the partying to a minimum? I mean, granted, some young ballplayers couldn't be trusted in that situation, but I am asking if there's reason to think Joba is one of them. Maybe he just wants to stand at his buddy's wedding, and will be serious enough to lay off the booze and turn in early.

People are able to party at weddings and drive themselves home without literally killing themselves and/or others.
If people can go to weddings, drive themselves home without killing themselves, and they can do that on the same day, then going to a wedding on one day and pitching in a baseball game the next day can't be that much of a burden.
And playing a baseball game is a lot more physically strenous than attending a wedding. But, nobody has a problem with players playing a game, getting on a plane and then playing another game the next day.

Well, if the Yanks advance, I screwed up and scheduled my wedding October 13th (game 2 of the ALCS), so I can relate to these guys dilemma. But, the place we're getting married is perfect for fall weddings, so what are you going to do? Well, besides smuggle in a radio and try to be indiscreet, or I can schedule the divorce for the 14th.....

Dang, my birthday party is on the 13th. Actually it's for 3 of us in the dojo, and it's a stay overnight one. I won't be as responsible in the partying as Joba, so I'm being responsible in the not driving.

Yikes. I meant Sunday.
I'll leave it at this - if Joba goes, and gets screwed at the airport for some delay, etc., or something else, and then he gets pounded in the Game on Sunday, you tell me, are you going to be OK with him having elected to attend the thing in the middle of the ALDS?

How many 21-year olds are going to do that?

How many 21-year olds are pitching set-up for the NY Yankees in the playoffs?

Yes, because correlation != causation. If he gets shelled, it could be because he got shelled, not because he's "partied out."
Deion Sanders played football and baseball on the same day. How many games did Mickey Mantle play hungover? Dock Ellis pitched a game high on LSD. David Wells threw a perfect game while hung over. How many players played while hopped up on greenies? How many players played while coked up? Remember Tom Browning leaving in the middle of a WS game to tend to his pregnant wife?
There are way too many factors. AND Chamberlain's coming in from the bullpen, some 2 hours after the game starts. It's not as big a deal as you make it out to be.

Steve,
If he has a bad game, it's going to be because he had a bad game. It's not going to be because of something like him being an airport or attending a wedding the day before.
And, how is it that waiting around at an airport is even a bad thing? How is it worse to wait around in an airport than wait around in a hotel room?

I dunno guys. I've come to work well rested and I've come to work dead-tired where I've only had 3 hours sleep and was really taxed the day/night before...and, it does seems easier to get your job done when you're well rested.
But, that's just common sense, no?

I'm w/ Steve on this. The games and Joba (and Hughes is also invited) are too important to mess around w/. They can give a great gift and watch the video later.
If the Yanks do relent, forget commercial flying. ARod should make his private jet available.

An 8+ hour office workday is much different than the job of a MLB reliever, who literally sits for a couple of hours before he even thinks about warming up.
