Has It Really Been 4 Years?

Could it be that...Andy Pettitte's start in Game 2 of the 2003 World Series was the last great start by a Yankees pitcher in the post-season?

Can you name a starter that's done better since then?

Well come on Steve, that's not very fair - Pettitte went into the 9th that game.

I can think of several solid starts by Yankee starters in the postseason though - a couple by resident pitching ogre Mike Mussina.

But I think the best start in the postseason since then, was Jon Leiber in Game 2 of the 2004 ALCS (game score was 69)...that's a game I went to, and almost felt sorry for the Red Sox because that's when they 'lost' Curt Schilling. Sigh.

What I meant was, that's when they announced the issue with Curt Schilling's ankle.

I always hate running through the baseball reference 2004 ALCS games. The Red Sox really did have the 2001 Yankee Magic in that series...the only difference was the Yankees didn't have Randy Johnson.

Imagine how that would have turned out if the Yankees actually did trade for Randy in the midseason? He was an absolute beast in 2004.

Andrew - Mussina didn't make this cut, FYI:

Moose never had a post-season start for the Yankees with a Game Score of 75 or better.

It's happened 42 times, in total. Here's the guys to do it:

Whitey Ford 4 times
Bob Turley 3 times
Allie Reynolds 3 times
Andy Pettitte 3 times
Waite Hoyt 3 times
Orlando Hernandez 3 times
Vic Raschi 2 times
Herb Pennock 2 times

Going by game scores, there hasn't been a better pitched game by a Yankee since Pettitte's gem.

I didn't say 'great', but solid, which I think I would rate as a game score of at least 55. Mussina performed on his end of the bargain in several postseason games. He was an underappreciated contributor to several Yankee postseasons.

But, yeah, Lieber in Game 2 is the next-best start, even if it wasn't exactly 'great'.

It's actually pretty depressing when Jon Lieber is the highlight of the past 3 postseasons.

Are you defining "great" here based solely on game score? Because in the start after Pettitte's, Mussina went seven innings, gave up 1 run, walked 1, and struck out 9. Pettitte himself came back and had another good start in game six (1 ER over seven innings).

Actually, everyone pitched well against the Marlins. Clemens had a bad first inning in his game, and obviously Wells got hurt. The pitching goats in that series are definitely Wells and Weaver (with an assist from Torre). Though losing that first game, when Wells pitched well, didn't help.

Mussina had three fine performances in the 2004 playoffs (one against the Twins and two against the Red Sox). Lieber had a no-hitter going against the Sox in '04, too, and ended up going 7/1 ER. Even Kevin Brown had a nice start in the ALDS in 2004.

Chacon came up big in 2005 against the Angels (really the only pitcher who did; Mussina was okay in his first start and Randy Johnson was an abomination).

And 2006... well, Wang and Mussina were okay, but did we ever really have a chance to win with RJ and Wright pitching games three and four?

I was actually at that game. What a performance by Andy Pettitte! Hideki Matsui and Nick "The Stick" had pretty good games, as well. After Matsui hit that home run, the Stadium went absolutely NUTS. What an incredible moment!

Sorry for being the king of the off-topic comment, but anyway...

Kevin Thompson was traded to the A's for cash considerations. I don't know if Thompson is an everyday player, but I think he definitely has enough talent to be a fourth outfielder (he's good in all three outfield positions and has speed). I think the event that changed his career with the Yanks was when Torre and Cashman inexplicably chose the worthless Bubba Crosby over him for the fourth-outfielder's job.

Thompson seems like the type of player that can find a home on a team like the A's. I wouldn't be shocked to see him playing for them next year.

Inexplicably? I have a Mr. Gary Sheffield on line 1...
