A General Baseball Question: September Swoons
The 1934 Giants
The 1938 Pirates
The 1942 Dodgers
The 1951 Dodgers
The 1964 Phillies
The 1969 Cubs
The 1987 Blue Jays
The 1993 Giants
The 1978 Red Sox
If memory serves correct, the above teams all had rough months of September - where they blew their hold on first place.
Did I miss anyone here? Do you think there's a chance that some team this year may join this list? Who?

The 93 Giants kind of get a bad rap, those guys won 103 games that season and finished second to the Braves with 104. The third most wins that year was Philadelphia with 97.
And no, not to be negative but I don't expect the Red Sox to be there this year. 3.5 is still a comfortable lead. Although for some reason I feel their 3.5 is bigger than the Yanks 3.5 game lead in the Wild Card:)

Anything can happen. That's what's so great and miserable about this game. I make no predictions one way or the other... if the Yankees can take care of their own business, things will fall into place...
Go Yankees!

It's only 3 in the AFILC, and as the Yankees won the season series, a tie gives them the division. Still, I doubt it will happen.

FWIW, I didn't include the 1995 Angels on this list here - since they started to tank in August that year.
JeremyM - I hear what you're saying about the 1993 Giants...but, they had a 4.5 game lead on 9/1...and a 2 game lead on 9/8...and were tied for first on 9/28...and blew it.

I don't think anyone from 2007 will be added to this list. The Mets, obviously, are a candidate. But I have seen Philly crap the bed enough times to know that they'll find a way to blow their momentum and end up out of the playoffs yet again. It must be pure torture rooting for the Phillies. I'm glad I was born in New York and not 90 miles south of here...

The Red Sox. You gotta believe.
To put things in a little perspective, the Yankees are now closer to the division than the Tigers are to the Wild Card (The Yanks are behind 3 games on the Red Sox, ahead 4 games of the Tigers).
Take your worry about the Tigers, and that's what the Red Sox should worry about the Yankees, and then a little more.

Andrew - But, as of this moment, are we sweating the Tigers? Last night's results were big. I'm not as nervous about them now. So, should Boston worry about NY?

"Andrew - But, as of this moment, are we sweating the Tigers?"
I know I was...yesterday. That's why we were scoreboard watching, was it not? Now the Yankees are 3 back in the loss column, same as the Tigers were yesterday to the Yankees.
Out of all the AL teams leading their divisions, Boston has the weakest hold.
Looking at the standings, there are tight, tight races in the NL. Would the Cubs go on this list, if they were overtaken by the Brewers? What about the Diamondbacks.
I had a dream last night that the Yankees had, a few games before the season ended, finally taken the division from the struggling Red Sox. I awoke filled with joy and optimism. The Red Sox could very well lose again tonight with Jon Lester facing AJ Burnett, and the Yankees win, cutting the lead down to two. It's not so impossible. Let me have my dreams!

Damn right Boston's worried. They have Manny out, Ortiz with a bad knee, Crisp with a bad back, Youklis out last night, they're bumping Dice-K for a rookie (a no-hit rookie, but a rookie) and they just got pasted by the Jays. Why they keep trotting Wakefield out there, I'm not sure. The Yanks are the hottest team in MLB since the break, and they have caved enough times to NY in the past that every single Boston fan and player sees a huge NY in the rear-view mirror right now. And well they should.

I mean, they'll make the playoffs, so they get to rest Matz for the series, but this is not the team that the writers have said is so flawless. We are a better team in the second half. They should be worried about facing us in the playoffs.

The 2006 Tigers made the playoffs, but they certainly shit the bed with regards to the division when the lost it to Minnesota.
