SOTD: Banging Out The Hits - Hardcastle Style In The A.L.

Five (19+ hit games) down for the 2007 Yanks - and just 3 to go to pass the 1996 M's.

Saturday night was also our 34th victory by 5 or more runs, more than such teams as the 2001 Mariners, the 1906 Cubs, and 1961 Yankees.

To the best of my knowledge, which is just looking at famous teams' baseball-reference.com pages, the 1927 Yankees have the most wins in a season by 5+ runs, with 43, followed closely by the 1998 Yankees (42) and 1939 Yankees (41).

This team -- with Johnny Damon batting lead-off all year and all but three players unable to hit for two months -- is on pace for a record 47 wins by 5+ runs.

If you eliminate all the common home and road games, here are the 21 non-common results:

Yankees: vs. BAL 3, vs. TOR 1, vs. DET 4, vs. SEA 3, @ DET 4, @ ANA 3, @ KC 3
Red Sox: vs. TB 3, @ TB 3, vs. OAK 2, vs. MIN 4, vs. ANA 4, @ CWS 4, @ BAL 1

We've heard all year about the number of Devil Rays-Red Sox games remaining, and it certainly appears that Yankee fans will be rooting for TB an awful lot down the stretch. Meanwhile, the Bombers will have the ultimate chance to gain some revenge on Detroit after last year's postseason. -LS
