Pods Want Iggy

From Ken Rosenthal -

If the Yankees want to get rid of Kei Igawa, they have their chance.

The Padres, continuing in their attempt to upgrade their starting rotation, have claimed Igawa off waivers, major league sources told FOXSports.com.

San Diego was awarded the claim on Friday, and the two teams have until the end of the weekend to work out a trade for the 28-year-old Japanese pitcher. If no deal can be worked out in that time frame, Igawa would remain in New York for at least the rest of the season.

No American League team put a claim on Igawa, nor did any National League with a worse record than San Diego.

Bless those Padres.

Isn't that where we sent Irabu as well? I can't remember but I think so.

I hope they can work it out and get Igawa as far away from NY as possible. We'll always remember him fondly as the guy that started the game when A-Rod hit his walk-off grand slam in the snow flurries in early April. See ya, Kei.

Irabu was acquired from the Padres, and dealt to the Expos.

Anyway, there may not be any space for Igawa in the rotation next season, given the options the Yanks have @ AAA & AA.

They're not paying him to be a short reliever.

isn'[t he making the same as farnsworth?

Less than Farnsworth, I believe...of course, not when you factor in the amortization of that posting fee.

If the Pads want him and take on the entire salary - bye bye. There's no room for him in the rotation and fly-ball pitchers with control issues don't usually work out too well coming from the bullpen. Maybe he can work out in Petco since that park would certainly help him cut down on the homers.

Igawa's salary isn't that big of a deal. It's five million per. As it was said, that's less than what Farnsworth makes. That's more than someone like Igawa would make, but not by much.

The big cost is the posting fee. If the Padres don't pay the posting fee too, then the Yankees basically gave another team in Japan over twenty million dollars for less than half a season of a pitcher. The Yankees have money, but that's the kind of waste that makes people hate the team. If the Padres are willing to throw in some cash to cover that cost, they should do this in a second. (If it was up to me, I would do it for nothing in return.) But it's hard to believe Cashman can just say "oops" about the 24 million he paid to get this guy.
