Missing Signs

Do you know the big Bank of America sign that’s at Yankee Stadium in back of the right field bleachers? In the last 32 years, that sign space has been used by many different advertisers. If I recall correctly, the first sign in that big space was for Manufacturers Hanover – and it was fashioned like a N.Y. License Plate (at that time) with an orange background and blue lettering. Anyone else remember this sign? Anyone remember what types of signs were used there in between Manny Hanny and BOA?

If no one can remember any of them, what does that say about the cost effectiveness of advertising at Yankee Stadium?

Wasn't there a Marlboro sign there?

My mistake. I just found an old photo. The Marlboro sign was over the black. In the same photo there's a Citibank sign where the BOA is now. Maybe that space has always been for banks? And it seems like Bud had that space next to the Diamond Vision for a while now.

It was Fleet before it was BofA (as BofA is the successor entity to Fleet Bank after their merger).

However, I'd dispute your implicit argument that there's little to no value in advertising at Yankee Stadium. All advertising has a shelf life. That we can't remember who advertised in that spot between Manny Hanny (during the Bronx Zoo years) and BofA doesn't mean that much. The point is that you know that BofA is there now which makes their investment in that signage valuable.

I was going through some other photos. Looks like Fleet was there before BOA. I'm getting the feeling that it is the "bank space". Whatever the Official Bank of the New York Yankees is gets put there.

As far as being cost effective and not remembering the ads that are there, for however long their contract is with the team, I'm sure it's worth their while to be the Official Whatever. Because we don't remember it 5 years later doesn't mean much.

Good research Jen, thanks.

FWIW, I only knew it was BOA now because of a picture on my desk from a game this past May.

It doesn't say anything about the cost effectiveness of advertising at Yankee stadium, because:

1) We are a small sample.
2) MJs point above about recency.
3) We don't know how much BofA pays for that space, it's possible that they got it for free for financing one Yankee related venture or another.
4) We have no idea what the objective of that billboard is.
5) We are not privy to BofAs business results that could have been driven in part by that placement.

Saying that that board is not cost effective based on you not remembering the other advertisers who have had it over the years, is like my mom watching one baseball game a year and saying that Jason Giambi isn't very good because he struck out twice in one game.
