Mike Myers DFA'ed

The LoHud Yankees Blog is reporting that "the Yankees have decided to designate LHP Mike Myers for assignment."

Coming into today's game, Myers pitched 54 times for the Yankees this season. In 14 of those 54 games, he entered the game where the Yankees were losing by 4 runs or more. In 16 of those 54 games, he entered the game where the Yankees were ahead by 4 runs or more. This tells you that Myers was used to mop-up 56% of the time he came into a game.

In 20 of those 54 games, Myers entered the game where the Yankees were tied (in the game score) or ahead or behind by 2 runs or less. This tells you that Myers was used in a tight spot only 37% of the time he came into a game.

Brian Cashman was probably looking for a way to add Joba Chamberlain or Jason Giambi to the roster and figured "Heck, Joe only trusts Myers in spots where he can't really hurt the team, so, what's the value in having him on the team?"

Two games hurt Myers's stats this year: April 24th and May 19th. However, in that latter game, he was taking one for the team.

Mike seemed like a pretty good guy, personally. I bet that he'll be missed in the clubhouse. I wish him well at his next stop - except when he's facing the Yankees.

"Newsday" is reporting that Jim Brower of all people will be promoted to replace Myers. So the Yankees smarten up and dump Myers, who has been miserable this year at his stated job, but then bring up filler like Brower instead of Britton, Ramirez, Chamberlain or even Ohlendorf? Maybe they feel the latter two aren't ready yet (though it was rumored Joba would be up for the Toronto series), but why choose Brower over the first two?

The annoying thing about Myers this year is that he was death on righties and a punching bag for lefties, but Torre refused -- unless, as you pointed out, it was a blowout -- to use Myers in any other way. With some of the struggles of the bullpen, it's surprising Myers was never tried out as a one-inning reliever.

I hope the Brower thing is either an error by "Newsday" or that he's here for only a few days. If they intend to keep him around, the team, philosophy-wise, took a step back.

This is exactly why I've always wondered why the Torre bashing is never accompanied with a dose of Cashman bashing. It's not Joe's fault that Britton's stuck in the minors behind losers like Jim Brower. And while it WAS Joe's fault that Edwar didn't get a fair shake in the big leagues, Cashman's still gotta do a better job with the guys he brings up. A GM's job is to get the manager to use the guys he brings up. Cashman's never been able to do that successfully. He's a total pushover when it comes to that part of his job...

MJ, if I'm not mistaken I think Britton was just activated from the DL recently and was on it for a period of time (just speculation because he was recently activatede from the DL) so I understand him not being on the big team for the last month or so.

As for who is getting called up as Myers replacement.... conflicting stories say that its either Brower or Joba with the majority of the papers in NYC saying Brower and having quotes from Ca$hMoney detailing this. I think its just the Post reporting that Joba is coming up but Morrissey has no sources of this info

Nevermind, Pete over at Lohud just confirmed that Brower was called up. Annnddd this makes no ##$#! sense.

The Post has Joba meeting the team in Toronto.

Brower? I guess Wayne Franklin isn't available. What a bizarre move.

Speaking of retreads, anyone see that Tim Redding has actually pitched decently for Washington this season?

Santino, as Riveraveblues pointed out, the post has no sources on their story. I hope its true.. but it might be wishful thinking..for now.

Maybe Joba's passport issue hasn't been resolved? Could Ramirez be having passport issues too?

Brian Cashman is an awful GM. While I know that he was not responsible for spending the entire $200M+, for that kind of money you ought to be able to build a MUCH better team than the 2007 Yankees. The bullpen is totally inadequate for playing in tight games with good teams. I love what we've been able to do to teams with second tier pitching lately, but that's not going to be good enough when things get tough. This has been obvious from the start, continued to be obvious before the July 31 deadline, and continues to be obvious today.

So what are we doing about it? Acquiring a quality reliever? Nope, seems not to be important. Praying that Joba can make an impact? Maybe he can, but is rushing him through the right thing? Trading Scott Proctor? DFAing Mike Myers? Who's going to pick up all those innings?

Cashman clearly has his head up his ass, doesn't know baseball, and would have been fired for sure were George not addled. The best thing for this team would be to get a decent GM.

You already have quality relievers in the minors. And it's not really rushing Joba; look at the numbers he's put up at the levels he has pitched. If he's not ready, he's pretty close to it.

Trading Proctor boosted the bench in Betemit. Means we can say goodbye to Cairo. Some combination of Vizcaino, Bruney, Chamberlain, Britton, etc, etc, etc, can will pick up his innings. Myers was a mopup man, no big loss there.

With Giambi's impending return, Damon goes to the bench (hopefully) which was a joke as recently as last month.

The Yanks are better off now, or are in a better position now, than they were before.

>> Maybe Joba's passport issue hasn't been resolved? Could Ramirez be having passport issues too? >>

Could be - these things take time, you know.

I've read a few different things - one of them suggested the Yanks wanted JOba to pitch 2 days in a row out of the bullpen before they brought him up.

When all is said and done, the panic is completely unnecessary. If Joba wasn't coming soon, he would have remained a starter through the rest of the season...
