Joba Arrives Tomorrow?
From the Omaha World-Herald -
Joba Chamberlain has been summoned to the major leagues and is scheduled to pitch in relief of Roger Clemens Tuesday night as the New York Yankees visit the Toronto Blue Jays.
Chamberlain, a 21-year-old former Nebraska All-American, received word of the promotion Monday, according to his father, Harlan Chamberlain, and immediately flew from Scranton, Pa., to Toronto.
The Yankees have not officially announced the move.
"To be happening this quick, it's just a dream," the elder Chamberlain said. "It's a dream that was always there, but to achieve it this quick, it's unbelievable. It's surreal."
Chamberlain, the No. 41 pick in the 2006 draft, compiled a 9-2 record with 125 strikeouts in 84 1/3 innings over 15 starts at Class A Tampa, Class AA Trenton and Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre before moving to the bullpen.
Since July 30, the hard-throwing right-hander has dominated in three relief appearances, striking out 10 and allowing one hit in four innings. Chamberlain fanned five of six Buffalo batters over two innings Saturday in his most recent Class AAA outing.
If Giambi comes back, as reported, as well, it will mean two bodies will have to leave. It will probably be Jim Brower and Shelley Duncan heading back to Triple-A. Maybe it will be Jeff Karstens instead of one of them?
If it were me, I would send down Brian Bruney and cut Kyle Farnsworth. But, the Yankees would probably never make a move like that one.

Karstens or Bruney go down and Cairo gets cut. Basak is at AAA and Gonzolez is at AA if a defensive replacement is needed, Betemit/Philips have enough versatility to cover the infield bench.

My guess is Karstens and Cairo.

Awww, how cute, my "little" hometown newspaper scooping the big city New York papers:) Take that Post!
Joba will be the second native Nebraskan to make the Yanks this season, after the legendary Chris Basak. I saw Joba pitch here for the Huskers, and to show you how little I know about baseball, I never saw this coming. Unbelievable. Hopefully it pans out.
I can't imagine that Brower has options left, so wouldn't they have to DFA him? I can't see them calling him up for one day only to waive him. I could be totally off base here, but I think another move is in the works--hopefully it's a ticket out of town for Farnsworth.

it seems that Karstens will be sent down to make room for Joba. when Giambi returns, it's a tough call between Shelley and Cairo, but I'd rather keep Shelley because he can actually hit. Cairo has been replaced by the superior UIF tandem of betemit (3b, SS, 2b) and Phillips (1b, 3b, 2b). Shelley can be very useful against LHP at either OF, DH, or 1b, and this team's had trouble against LHP's.
very excited to see Joba pitch!

Re: sending either Shelley down or Cairo away, I thought I heard on the radio broadcast today that they planned on keeping Duncan up. But I could be wrong (maybe I just wanted to hear that:-). I think Cairo is as good as gone though. I'm pretty sure Susan mentioned too.

It would be a real disappointment to see Duncan sent down, a sign that the Yankees are still doing business the old way.
That said, I'm more interested in how they'll use Chamberlain. I'd like to see him thrown into the fire -- the 8th inning, not the 6th or 7th. They are wearing Viscaino down now. Let's see if Chamberlain has the make-up to handle the late-game tension.

This is definitely exciting, can't wait to see how he does. I wonder if they will put Farnsworth on waivers? If not I would think Karstens goes down for now, unless they want him to be their long reliever. Also, Cairo hasn't played in a while and Duncan has so I would think Cairo is gone. Joe seems to like Duncan but we know how much he likes Cairo too, so who knows.

I'd be shocked if Miggy is cut. He's Jeter's friend - they throw together before every game - and he's the one decent pinch-runner on the bench. I think he's safe for now.

~and he's the one decent pinch-runner on the bench.~
If Cairo is DFA'd for Giambi then Damon would be available as a pinch runner.

Maybe Cairo pulls a hammy before todays game, DL him until Sept 1 when rosters expand and he would be eligible for the post season when you really only need 10 or 11 pitchers, not the 12 the Yanks are currently carrying. They do not need to clear a 40 man roster spot for Giambi.

Giambi and Duncan are similar players, so my guess is that Duncan gets sent down. Joe really likes Cairo's professionalism and versatility. My sense is that Cairo is an important clubhouse guy as well.

Cairo, Phillips, and Betemit are similar players too.
The IF is covered with Phillips (1b, 2b, 3b) and Betemit (1b, 2b, 3b, SS), and Duncan could hold down DH, 1b, RF & LF. Heck, Rodriguez could play SS on Jeter's days off, if need be.
If Cairo remains with the team, Torre or Cashman or both need to be smacked. There is no reason, none at all, for him to be on this team.

I Just realized that in addition to Karstens going doing the Yanks need to make another move to add Joba to the 40 man before he can be promoted. Myers was cut and Brower was added. Anybody taken off the 40 man would have to clear waivers or the Yanks would lose him. Cairo is the only guy that really even has a chance. Sure farnsworth could clear, but they would have to release him if he did not accept a minor league assignment (Still paying all his salary).
I am not even sure if Brower can be sent down without going through waivers... or opting for Free Agency...

Myers was an important clubhouse guy too. But that clubhouse is full of important clubhouse guys. And I'm sure Jeter can find someone else to play catch with.

Cairo is NOT a similar player to Phillips and Betemit. Cairo is the only one of the three who can play SS. After watching Betemit play 3B, there is no way I would let him near SS. Cairo is also a superior baserunner and bunter.
I would love to keep Duncan. There is talk that both Karstens and Bruney will be sent down so that Duncan and Cairo stay. I'm fine with that.

He already played shortstop on Thursday. He seemed to do a fine job from what I remember. And what was so bad about his play at third? He started 2 rather nice double plays on Sunday. And I believe he made another nice play at the end of the game as well. Plus if, god forbid, Jeter was ever out for more than a day or 2 there's another pretty good SS on the team already.

Jen, you ought to know that the Yankees aren't going down that road. There will be no Alex at SS if Jeter gets hurt. End of story.

I think this discussion on Cairo is missing the bigger picture. Because Brower was added to the 40 man when Myers left, when Chamberlain is added to the 40 man, who ever is taken off must clear waivers, or the Yanks lose him. Duncan will not clear waivers, and I doubt Brower will either. Cairo has a shot to clear. Unless they can transfer a player to the 60 day dl, they could loose the player.
I do not think the want to loose Duncan. Cairo is a gonner. I don' think the Yanks have a choice.
And Cairo's defense is nothing special. Gonzalez is a beter defensive player right now.

Looking into it a little further, Kevin Reese is on the 40 Man, he could be dropped.

No Don, please enlighten me. Why wouldn't they use Alex at short in a pinch?

==================
Yeah, you're right; Phillips & Betemit are far superior options...
IIRC, Betemit has played the majority of his career @ SS. And with the offensive capability of this team, you're not going to find many bunters. Players who use bunts as a primary offensive weapon are usually ones who can't or don't hit.

Especially when they have used him @ SS. The most famous case of this was the "Jeter dives into stands" game against the Sox in 2004. That game also saw Sheffield make his return to 3b.
