Jeff Nettles Going To Wichita
Some belated news on the son of a former Yankees great, and a former Yankees farmhand himself -
The Kansas City Royals said Monday they had signed third baseman Jeff Nettles to a minor league contract out of the independent Atlantic League.
The 28-year-old Nettles, son of former New York Yankees third baseman Graig Nettles, will go to Double-A Wichita, a Royals spokesman said.
Nettles had spent almost five seasons with the Somerset Patriots of the Atlantic League. He's the franchise career leader in RBIs (377), home runs (103) and doubles (127).
I'm happy for Jeff - he's put in his time in the Atlantic League. I've had a chance to see him play in Somerset many times. I think this is a filler move for the Royals - they had nobody at Wichita to play third. Still, you have to be in it to win it, and, this gives Nettles a chance to show some people in an "organized" chain that he has some skills. Stranger things have happened to guys once they were given a chance...and, at the worst, I'm sure he could come back to Somerset if things don't work out. He was/is a fan favorite there.

I got to see him play a couple of games when he was in the SAL league for the Yankees low A team. Don't remember much about the game except that he was at third and the firstbaseman's number was 23.
