Chipper Jones Is An Idiot

Why is Chipper Jones talking about Alex Rodriguez? What happened, every Hooters waitress in the world go a break together at the same time, and Jones got bored and needed to say something about someone to pass the time? So stupid Chipper. So, so, stupid.

Update, 8/9/07, 2:49 pm ET: Watch Chipper back-pedal! From Newsday:

When Chipper Jones told a reporter from The Associated Press on Wednesday that he believes questions about possible steroid use will follow Alex Rodriguez in his pursuit of Barry Bonds' home-run record, Jones didn't think he was making big news.

Jones insisted Thursday he was actually defending A-Rod, and the Braves slugger blamed the New York media "the pot-stirrers here," he said for making it seem as if he was taking aim at the Yankees third baseman.

Jones wouldn't address New York reporters Thursday, speaking only to the reporters who regularly cover the Braves. He told them he will call A-Rod to explain himself, and that he should have simply told the AP reporter that A-Rod will have "to answer the questions just like me, just like anybody else in this era."

Jones had absolutely no interest in going over his opinions Thursday. He walked into the clubhouse just before it was set to close to reporters an hour before the game and when he saw a crowd of reporters approaching his locker, he sternly said, "New York media can beat it. By the way, if you think you're going to get any more -- out of me, you got another thing coming."

After the New York reporters left the room, Jones ripped the media here some more before making it clear that he wants to speak directly with A-Rod to make sure everything is clear.

"I want him to know what was said and what context it was in," he said. "It was nothing aimed at him. I was actually defending him. I think once I explain it to him, he'll see how it [WAS MEANT]."

Not trying to be a jerk, but I'm surprised you didn't add this to your "punt some offense and save the drama for your mama" file.

So Chipper, what are you using, buddy? Let's just call everyone out, why stop with just A-Rod. I think anyone that's ever hit a home run is using myself.....

We can all thank the man who slept through the 1990's, the tower-of-jelly himself, Allan H. 'Bud' Selig.

There's nothing wrong with what he said. Because of the era they're playing in, there will be questions.

Rodriguez is mentioned because he's the odds on favorite to break the HR record

He and the rest of the owners were too busy counting their $$. What did you expect?

Even his current stance is more about breaking the union, than doing the right thing.

I don't find anything wrong with what Jones said. In fact I agreed with pretty much everything. Steve why don't you stop searching for drama.

I've never really cared for Chipper much but I think all he is saying is that anyone who approaches any record is going to have to answer questions about steroids, whether they are fair questions or not they will still be asked.

Plus, the reporter probably specifically asked him about ARod...I don't think Chipper just brought ARod's name up out of nowhere.

If Canseco had the goods on A-Rod, why didn't we see it in his first book? A-Rod was a superstar and already the game's highest-paid player at that point.

I didn't think Chipper accused ARod of anything, he was just breaking it down and I think he's right - as ARod gets closer to the record I'm sure there will be all types of investigative reporting going on to try and find dirt on him.

Talk about spewing out of both sides of your mouth. How can you respond to questions about Bonds and steroids by saying "I'll reserve judgement" and then gaze accusingly at A-Rod ? If you are going to "reserve judgement" about a guy that physically appears almost with question to be benefiting from steroid use, that is surrounded by people that stink from the Balco scandal, and who all but admitted using steroids "unknowingly" how the hell do you say one word about anyone else ????

Calling him an idiot is being generous.

Chipper is an idiot and the best advice to all concerned is to keep your mouth shut (just ask Jason). He’s an egomaniacal turkey that hasn’t learned that the world will function without his unique perspective and off the cuff speculations.

The difference between Bonds and A-Rod is that A-Rod will get to (and have to) put up large numbers of homers while under the scrutiny of a PED testing program. Bonds racked his numbers from great to off the charts while Selig and MLB were asleep at the switch. It appears that the Ranger’s clubhouse was among the hotbeds of steroid use. A-Rod might, or might not, have tried 'em for a while, but if he pounds out 40-50 a year for the next 4 or 5 years, if and when he breaks the record it will be considered clean by the fans. I hope it happens, and I hope it happens in a Yankee uniform.

I’d really like to see some stats comparison between pre-testing and post-testing seasons. For example…. A guy like Varitek has OPS’s of .863, .872, and .855, in 03, 04, and 05, then drops to .725 and .759 in ’06 and 07. Reasonable presumption…dirty. I know he’s a catcher and he hit “that” age, but it does make one wonder. Jorge on the other hand…OPS’s of .923, .881, .782 in 03, 04, and 05, compares nicely to .866 and .965 in 06 and 07. Reasonable presumption…clean. Using similar concepts, A-Rod looks clean, Jeter looks clean (no greenies there either – way to go Cap), Matsui looks clean. Manny looks clean. Ortiz looks clean, although he’s hitting a lot more doubles and a lot less homers now. Maybe that’s another gauge, how does the ratio of doubles vs. homers change before and after PED testing. Sheff looks like he might have used between 2000 and 2003. Bonds looks dirty between 2000 and 2004. He probably hit something like 60-65 more dingers in those years than might have been expected. Look for spikes in the years leading up to PED testing, and a drop off right after. Sammy looks dirty from 98-02. Note the huge shift in the doubles to homers ratio. I’m sure Sammy wanted the money, but he also came back so he could prove that he could hit 30-40 dingers while testing was going on. He picked Texas, in part, because the ball flies out of there and so he could DH. Not quite working out for you big fella. Looks like more doubles than dingers. Check out the spike in Gab Kapler’s numbers.

Did you even read the article?

He also said because of what Canseco bought to the table last time that he

eh, didn't edit that properly; that second line isn't supposed to be there.

Basically the gist of the article was that Rodriguez is going to have to answer questions if/when he approaches the record.
