Cano Honored On Isle Of Staten
From Newsday -
Just hours after Alex Rodriguez hit his 500th home run and was showered with cheers in the Bronx, Robinson Cano received similar treatment on Staten Island Saturday.
After going 4-for-5 with three RBIs in the Yankees' 16-8 pummeling of the Kansas City Royals, Cano rushed to Richmond County Bank Ballpark, where he was honored for his contributions to the Staten Island Yankees.
Cano, who played for the Yankees' Class-A team in 2001, had his old No. 17 jersey retired and the fans received autographed posters before the S.I. Yankees took on the Lowell Spinners, a Red Sox affiliate.
Because of the Yankees' offensive outburst, which led to a four-hour game, Cano was 20 minutes late for the ceremony and didn't speak to reporters. He sat with family members in a guarded suite before leaving the game in the fourth inning.
The second baseman hit just .274 in 24 games for Staten Island. He has since developed into a big-league star -- .315 career average -- and in 2006, he became the first former Baby Bomber to make a major-league All-Star team. Cano's name and number will join Jason Anderson (No. 19), who was the first former Bomber to make the majors, and Chien-Ming Wang (No. 41) on the railing of the stadium's second deck, adjacent to the press box.
Wang, who went 10-5 with a 2.12 ERA in Class-A, was honored last year.
Show up late and leave in the fourth inning? Robbie, com'on you have to stay longer than that when they retire your number and have a day for you - even if it's a Short-Season A-ball team.

You're getting on Robinson because he showed up late? It's not like he was napping on a lazy Saturday afternoon and forgot to get a wake-up call. He was actually at work, going 4-5 with a couple of extra base hits. Steve, you're WAY too hard on people. It's not like a single fan in the stadium had a stopwatch and binoculars, checking off when the kid showed up and took off...

No, I'm getting on him for only staying there for an hour on a night that he was being honored. If he got there late, with good excuse, as you note, and then left in the 4th, he was only there for about 60 minutes - according to my rough math. That's pretty much saying "Thanks, but, I have better things to do on a Saturday night."

Then why did you start your commenting with "Show up late and leave in the fourth inning?"

To stress the fact that he was there for a very short time.
