Been A Long Time
The Yankees allowed 16 runs in their game yesterday and New York only had 3 hits to their credit. When was the last time that the Yankees allowed 16+ runs in a game where they had 3 or less hits themselves?
The answer: July 11, 1979.
The Yankees, at close of business yesterday, find themselves 8 games out of first place. When was the last season where the Yankees were 8 games out (or more) at the close of business on August 27th?
The answer: 1995. But, that was not a "full" season. The last "full" season where the Yankees were 8 games out (or more) at the close of business on August 27th was 1992.
In a nutshell, we're seeing things in Yankeeland this season that we haven't seen in 15 to 30 years.
Let's hope that it's another 15 to 30 years before we see them again.

Steve--Spare us this 1992 drama stuff. Seattle lost again. The Yanks will right the ship. Three behind in the loss column with 31 to go is very doable. This team will win 93 games and get in.

Whenever Mussina doesn't start, the Yankees have a good chance of winning. Yes or no? Especially against the Devil Rays and Toronto (and Kansas City), who they'll be playing the majority of the time in September, while Seattle plays Cleveland, the Angels, the Yankees, Detroit and Oakland. The Yankees have a good shot at the wild card. It sucks that they couldn't put Detroit away, because I think they'll be the main competitors down the road, but they've still got a one game lead over them, and they are going to be without Sheffield for a while. I'm optimistic about the Yankees in October. While losing the division streak sucks, I think the playoff streak is more impressive.

No. Phil Hughes has an ERA of 5.35 and the Yankees have lost 4 of the 7 games that he has started this season.

That Phil Hughes. He's not fit to carry Doc Gooden's crack pipe.
I suppose it's Hughes' fault that --
1) The Yankees scored zero runs off of Burnett on April 26th.
2) The Yankees scored zero runs off of Eric Bedard on August 15th and the O's scored three off of Mo to win it.
3) That Sean Henn stinks and gave it up on August 20th.
4) And that they couldn't score one more measly run against the Tigers, after he and the bullpen shut down that offense after a rough start.
Send this kid to the Rockies for Aaron Cook already.

Steve--They right the ship starting tonight. They do it with slightly better starting pitching against a weaker schedule and averaging 7.516 runs per game the rest of the way.
Everyone is itching to write the Yankees obituary for 2007. Russo, Harper, Lupica, Madden, The New York Times staff, Olney, Gammons etc... All the Yankee and/or Torre-haters--they're all ready. Good. That will make it even better.
With 75 games to go, I said the Yanks would need to go 50-25 to make the post-season. 93 wins will do it. 21-10 from here on in.
You have written this team off since when--the end of May? And here we are in the heat of a wildcard race.
I say they do it.

Oh, and any of these teams--notably Seattle--has a 4th or 5th starter they "can trust?" Anyway, we can agree to disagree. I say the Yanks will do it and you say no. Let's see what happens.
