August 29, 1967
Something I wrote today for the Stat of the Day Blog got me interested in recent long games at Yankee Stadium. And, I came across the game of August 29, 1967.
Look at the Yankees starting line-up in that contest:
New York Yankees
1. H Clarke 2B
2. M Hegan 1B
3. T Tresh LF
4. S Whitaker RF
5. C Smith 3B
6. B Robinson CF
7. B Tillman C
8. R Amaro SS
9. B Monbouquette P
Steve Whitaker batting clean-up?
Here's the kicker. This August 29th is the 40th anniversary of that game. And, who do the Yankees play that day? Once again, it will be the Boston Red Sox - as it was back in 1967. Since Horace Clarke had the game winning hit for the Yankees on August 29, 1967, in the bottom of the 20th, I think the Yankees should bring Clarke back this year and have him throw out the first pitch before the game of August 29th. You know, celebrate the 40th anniversary of that crazy game and maybe bring the Yankees some luck that day.
It's too bad that this game footage, if there was any, is probably lost. Now, this is one that I would love to see on Yankees Classics on YES.
The attendance for that game, 40 years ago, was 40,314. That caught my eye - because the Yankees were so bad that season. Then I realized that this game was the second game of a double-header! The Yankees lost the first game that day, in 9 innings, by a score of 2-1.
Some day in Yankees history, huh?

You should try and find out if it was a give-away day.
Bats, perhaps? Bat day was always a biggie!
Or did they not start that until George took over?

I can answer why the place was so packed. (I'm so glad I stumbled upon this, even though it's after 1:00 AM!)
As it happens, I was at Yankee Stadium that day, although only for the first game of the doubleheader. It was my very first time there. I was almost 9 years old.
I BEGGED and BEGGED my parents to take me to the game, because for weeks the Yankee announcers had been plugging the giveaway promotion.
It was for a little vinyl phonograph record containing audio highlights of Yankee history, followed by baseball tips from various Yankee players and coaches.
I believe I still have the record someplace in my attic. I haven't played it in 35+ years. I remember it having Lou Gehrig's "Luckiest Man" speech, Joe D.'s "thank the Lord for making me a Yankee", Scooter's call of the Mick's 500th HR, etc.
I remember there were tips on playing the outfield from Joe Pepitone(!). I remember playing Mantle's tips over and over because I couldn't make out what he said through his thick Oklahoma drawl.
Anyone have any idea what this record might be worth now (not that I'd ever sell!)?
I totally forgot about that day, and by another coincidence, I have tickets to take my son to the August 30, 2007 game against the Red Sox. He is 10, just one year older than I was back in '67.
Thanks so much for bringing back all the memories!

^ ... wow, that is... an incredible story, wow!
And gee, I would pay 100 bucks out of my college student budget for that record myself!

Ditto that! Thanks ben!!
And, this is a great chance for me to plug this request again...
Have you ever been to Yankee Stadium? Do you go to Yankee Stadium often?
Related, do you have an interesting story about a time when you were at the Stadium? Maybe you were there for a famous game? Or, maybe you once saw something there that you’ll always remember for some particular reason – because it was wacky or moving? Perhaps you once went to a game and that day will now always have great personal meaning to you? Maybe you have learned some tricks about getting to and around the Stadium through the years that you think are special? Have you noticed a change in the Stadium “experience” through the years? Do you have a Yankee Stadium foul and/or homerun ball story? Have you ever been ejected from Yankee Stadium? What sections of Yankee Stadium have you sat in that you enjoyed the most – and/or the least?
It seems that most Yankees fans have at least one “Yankee Stadium” story – heck, I have more than I can count – how about you?
If you have a “Yankee Stadium” story, and you’re willing to share it for a project that I’m looking into, please send me an e-mail to author [at] baseballsamegame [dot] com
And, if you know of anyone else who has a good Stadium tale, please do pass this request along to them. Thanks.
