Just For The Fun Of It

The very few teams who made great comebacks after being way down in the standings as of July or later:

The 1914 Braves were 15 games back on July 6th and made it to first on August 25th.

The 1930 Cardinals were 12 games back on August 9th and made it to first on September 13th.

The 1951 Giants were 13 games back on August 12th and made it to first on September 28th.

The 1964 Cardinals were 11 games back on July 9th and made it to first on September 29th.

The 1973 Mets were 12.5 games back on July 8th and made it to first on September 21st.

The 1978 Yankees were 14 games back July 20th and made it to first on September 10th.

The 1995 Mariners were 13 games back on August 3rd and made it to first on September 20th.

The 2006 Twins were 10 games back on July 2nd and made it to first on September 28th.

The 2007 Yankees were 10 games back on July 11th and......well, you tell me. Where do you think the Yankees will finish this season?

Steve - I still feel something special is gonna happen, I keep wishing it and if I wish hard enough then I fell it will happen.

Keep in mind that I'm not religious, I don't believe in black magic, or that someone is separating the good and bad after we die, but I believe in the Yankee mystique....something tells me this team is far from done.

At this point I've had all the losses I can take, I want to see a bunch of wins strung together.

Go Yanks!!!!

I've said this before, but the reason that there are so few teams on lists like these is because (1) teams that are in 1st place usually end up there because they're good and (2) teams that are way behind usually end up there because they're not good. I think Boston is more flawed than people think and I think the Yankees are not as bad a team as people think (they've just severely underperformed.)

I dunno. I'm hoping, of course. But, I also think there's a 96% chance that the Yankees will never catch the Sox this season.

Look at those teams that pulled it off. The word "Miracle" is associated with most of them, or, as in the case of 1964, there was a massive choke by the team that was in first.

That's what the Yankees need in 2007. A huge choke by the Sox or some miracle on their side. What's the odds on that? I'm thinking around 4%.

With all due respect....

May I remind all of you of some facts.

Since May 29, the Yankee record is 21-14 (god do they suck)

Since May 29, the Red Sox record is 17-19.

We've gained 5 games in the loss column over the span of 35 games.

There are 77 games left.

At that same rate - i.e. no miracles here - just Yanks continuing their sucky ways (but the Sox too), we should gain 11 games on them over those 77 games. Which would put us where?

I'm not claiming that the Sox will continue as bad as they have been for the past 6 weeks. But I think it a very fair chance that the Yanks will be better in the second half too.

Oh, did I forget to remind everyone that in the middle of the great suckitude the Yanks had a hot streak where we gained 7 games on the Sox in less than 3 weeks? Gee, where would that put us if we pulled one more of those off somewhen before mid-September?

Or that we gained 5 games on them in 4 days last year?

Bottom line. The East is VERY winnable.

I'm going to be a pessimist and say no -- at best second place, out of the WC. It's just less stressful for me that way. Besides, the Yankees have already used what, 7 rookie starting pitchers this year? No team that has done that has won the division. Or WC.

Of course, if they did, wouldn't that be a great managing feat by Torre?

If the Sawx are gonna win it, their pitching can't give out on them or else they f'ed. Their hitting isn't that good. They counted on the two headed monster of Ortiz and Manny for a long time, it's catching up to them. I just read this:

---
According to the Boston Herald, David Ortiz will likely need offseason knee surgery.
Ortiz is scheduled to undergo an MRI when he returns to Boston following the All-Star game and believes his right knee soreness is also behind ongoing quadriceps and hamstring problems. Ortiz said Tuesday that he likely hurt the knee last season while taking batting practice at Yankee Stadium, as his cleat got caught in the netting of the batting cage. "I think it's something they'll have to go in and fix at the end of the season," Ortiz said. "I'm trying to fight through it, but some days it isn't easy."
----

I'm inclined to say that they haven't been hit with some serious injuries yet, just one really with Schilling. Beckett had 15 days on the DL, but not anything more than that. If those arms start to tire....well.....DO YOU BELIEVE IN MIRACLES?????
