Giambi To Return In 2-4 Weeks?

From the Post -

Jason Giambi arrived in Tampa last night and is expected to begin working out at the Yankees' minor-league complex this week.

Giambi has been on the disabled list since June 1 with plantar fasciatis and a partial tear of the plantar fascia in the left foot, and it's not known how long before the lefty-hitting DH is away from rejoining the club.

He has told people within the organization he might need two weeks to get ready - however, it's more than likely Giambi won't return until the middle of next month.

It will be interesting to see how Torre fits Giambi back into the line-up, if he returns. He can only DH or play 1B. The latter is unlikey - given his issues there, defensively. Matsui, Cabrera and Abreu are all swinging hot bats. That means that it will be between Damon and Giambi at DH.

Damon, on the whole, has been a non-factor with the bat this season. Still, if you sit him, then who bats lead-off? Melky? Jeter? They can do that - but, it's not the best spots in the line-up for them.

In a way, right now, the Yankees don't need Giambi - as long as Matsui and Abreu are hitting. Of course, over the course of the next two to four weeks, things can always change - and the Yankees don't have to make a call on this until they know that Giambi is really coming back for sure.

I think Jeter should bat leadoff when Damon isn't in the lineup

1. jeter
2. matsui
3. abreu
4. a-rod
5. giambi
6. posada
7. phillips
8. cano
9. cabrera

matsui (if abreu hits) would get good pitches to hit since they don't want him to be on base when a-rod comes up, anyone know if matsui has batted second before?

Damon absolutely needs to go on the DL when Giambi comes back.

How do the Yankees not need Giambi? Are we talking about the good Giambi or the bad Giambi? The good Giambi is always needed -- he gets on base, hits for power and drives in runs.

I'm not exactly sure which injury it is now with Damon -- or if there is one anymore -- but the guy isn't hitting. He obviously brings speed to the table, but Damon's numbers can't be dismissed with the typical "Well, since two weeks ago, he's hitting..." line. He has simply not hit this year and if Giambi can come back strong and have one of his normal hot streaks to end the year, that would greatly help the team.

Torre is going to have to put on his little thinking cap and figure out how to get both Damon and Giambi playing time. The important thing is that he not sit Melky and play Damon in centerfield.

~~~How do the Yankees not need Giambi?~~~
What has their record been since he went on the DL this year?
What has their record been during his tenure here?
1. Abreu
2. Jeter
3. Matsui
4. A-Rod
5. Posada
6. Giambi
7. Cano
8. Philips
9. Melky
This gives you a double lead-off and spreads out lefties and righties.
By the way: doesn't this make you appreciate Melky. He can play centerfield, hit at either end of the lineup and is cheap.
Well, if that's the case, I'm glad Rico's here. The Sox won with him @ 1b.
