What's Wrong With The Yankees Offense?

The Yankees batters, as a team, month by month, so far this season:

Month - (AB) BA/OBA/SLG%

April - (810) .268/.347/.421
May - (968) .276/.351/.431
June - (836) .293/.368/.459

Strange, huh? June has been their best month with the bat? Go figure.

Here's the catch.

In April, they scored 131 runs - best in the A.L.
In May, they scored 137 runs - 7th best in the A.L.
In June, so far, they've scored 132 runs - 5th best in the A.L. (And, they're just 3 runs away from being 8th in the league.)

So, the hitters do better, month by month. But, the team scores less, compared to the league, month by month.

I guess this means it's not the amount of hits and walks that you get - it's when you get them that counts the most.

You're misreading the numbers.

In May, the Yankees's OBA and SLG increased, so so did the scoring.
In June, the Yankee's OBA and SLG increased, so so did the scoring (going on the assumption that we score more than 1.33 R/G over the next 3 games).

So, the Yankees hitters are doing better and the team is scoring more.

So, the fact that the Yankees are fairing worse vs. the league tells us more about the league than it does about the Yankees.

The data certainly suggests, for example, that the Yankees .347/.421 in April will therefore rank better, compared to the league than the other months would compare to the league, even though, compared to the other Yankees figures, they fare worse.

I dunno. I think it tells us that the Yankees, even 'tho they are improving, are not keeping up with the improvement that the rest of the league is making as the season rolls out and the warmer weather shows....
