SOTD: Yankees Win Streaks Under Torre
Darn, that Oliver Perez. We almost had a record. Read all about it.

Yanks would have gotten away with it if it weren't for those meddling Mets.

Schilling is being sent to Boston for an MRI on his shoulder, I hope they find lice, maggots, and a twinkie in there. His mouth though is still perfectly fine.

Unrelated but..Andy Phillips up and Phelps given his release. Thank you Cash. Phelps stinks and this means no Hillenbrand? With Miggy, two good gloves at 1B.

Of course Schilling is getting an MRI. He can't possibly just be old and suck. There must be something medically wrong.

Meh, Phelps was nothing great, but you could tell Torre didn't like him much, and as soon as he chose Cairo over him the writing was on the wall. As strange as this sounds, getting dumped might be the best thing for Phelps -- I think he was a decent enough bat to get a job somewhere. Once Torre no longer trusts someone, they are dead. It was probably a little embarrassing getting passed over for first by Cairo.
Here's the only thing, though: they no longer want Cairo playing first, which means Phillips will be the everyday first baseman. Here's what we learned about Phillips last year: he can field well, but he can't hit major-league pitching. Phelps at least showed he could hit lefties. Andy is a free-swinger to the extreme in the bigs and looked every bit the AAAA player everyone said he was. You have to wonder if Shelly Duncan should have gotten first crack. (Incidentally, why is Chris Basak still on the roster?)
Well, I guess it doesn't matter too much. I'll take Phillips over Cairo. And maybe Cashman will pull a first baseman out of his sleeve soon.

How do you know Torre didn't like Phelps? I'll be honest, I hated it when he played first. He was an absolutely awful first basemen. I think we should start putting more emphasis on actual skill than thinking Torre just doesn't like people.

Usage patterns. Phelps may not have been a good defensive 1b, but you could still get his bat in the lineup by having him start. Then you have Cairo come in as a defensive replacement.
Just one of many players Torre used improperly; Lofton, Villone, Sierra, Henn, Britton come to mind

Exactly.
Since Raf agrees, I guess I'm not a crazed anti-Torre madman for ONE night.
