If, At First......

With Rico Bergman now out, maybe it's time to try something radical: Move Johnny Damon to first, move Bobby Abreu to D.H., and let Kevin Thompson play right. (With Melky Cabrera in center.)

I've always thought that Damon to first made sense. Abreu needs to get out of the field. Thompson can cover ground and was swinging a hot bat, lately, in Triple-A.

Nah, these are the Yankees. It will never happen.

I can't see Damon at first at all. How do we know he can even field a groundball? I mean it's a nice idea but I think it would be even worse than Sheffield who at least had played the infield before. Plus, imagine Damon trying to turn two with that arm! \

I don't really see how you could say it makes sense, maybe if he had a long period of practice but nothing screams first baseman about Damon to me regardless of practice.

And what's Bernie going to do? By the time he's ready to play Rico will be off the DL.

EVeryone complains that this team is full of aging guys who are prone to getting hurt. What's Bernie, 38, 39? Jeez, a lot of you fans are so spoiled you want it all and want nothing at the same time.

Bernie's not coming. He had his chance in ST and basically gave the fans his middle finger.

JD to first is a good idea... the only thing that might keep him upright for the next 2 years. But it won't and shouldn't happen this year. He just has too little experience at 1B.

Both JD and Abreu need to be out of the OF. They can swap time at DH, with JD getting the majority of it. Melky plays CF or RF full time.

JD was great last year, but ultimately his signing will be a very bad one. Abreu is just terrible in the OF. That ball last night bounced in front of the wall.

~~~How do we know he can even field a groundball? ~~~
Probably just as good as Josh Phelps.
If Damon's legs need rest to heal, there's no point in sticking him in the field. I like Kevin and think he'd be a good fourth outfielder for a team, but pushing Damon to first, where he has one game of experience, just to get Bobby out of the field doesn't work for me personally.
You can't right the wrong of the Damon contract by sticking him at first base. I think we should almost be glad we can DH him right now. It's better than suffering through him in centerfield.
With this latest injury, the Yankees should really give Shelly Duncan a look. He's murdering AAA pitching. He's not really a prospect, and he will come here and strike out a ton, but maybe he can be Adam Dunn for two weeks and help the team. He plays first and a corner outfield and has a lot of power.
If they bring him up and he can't make contact, it doesn't take much to send him right back down.
Plus, if you have Shelly playing right and Phelps playing first, all those fans who don't want an All-Star at every position will be overjoyed.
Steve, your crystal ball seems to be in good shape.
Good call, Steve. Guess you were right. Since they've been telling Damon to work at first and in a corner, do you think this opens the door for a run at Ichiro?
JeremyM - thanks for the link. Glad my post was made at 08:48 AM and the ESPN report was made at 1:54 PM ET - - or else some would think I was copying!
As far as Ichiro....maybe. Or, what about Kosuke Fukudome?
I just hope they don't chase Torii Hunter or Andruw Jones.
Ichiro: Old, Expensive, Overrated
Hunter: Primed to break down, a la Damon
Jones: Poised for a steady decline; his chubbiness could become an issue as he ages
I'd prefer they go after a B-level guy for the short-term, maybe until Tabata is ready - perhaps Rowand or Eric Byrnes.
