Was He Expecting A Tickle?

I know, some people do expect that after a slap.

From the Boston Herald -

It doesn’t take Alex Rodriguez long to make enemies.

The New York Yankees infielder drew the ire of rookie Dustin Pedroia in the eighth inning of the Red Sox’ 7-3 win last night at Yankee Stadium by throwing an elbow at him as he slid into second base.

With one out in the eighth and the bases loaded, Jorge Posada hit a ground ball to third baseman Mike Lowell, who fielded the ball and fired to Pedroia for the force on A-Rod at second base. Pedroia came across the bag and threw to first base, just barely missing pulling off the double play, and was stunned when Rodriguez slid on the infield side of the base and threw his left elbow into his left side as he popped out of the slide.

“He went in late and kind of threw an elbow,” Pedroia said. “It was a little cheap but no big deal. I’ll remember. I play second base. I’ve got to turn two with the Yankees 19 times a year, so I know now when he’s coming in, my (arm) slot gets dropped to the floor. That’s it.”

Hey, maybe it was just payback for this slide into Jeter on a double-play during the second inning last night? I didn't see the play in the second. But, I've read that Pedroia went out of his way on that one. (Hat tip to BaseballThinkFactory.org.)

Screw Dustin Pedroia. All we hear all game long is that he's scrappy and "knows how to play the game of baseball." Well, apparently not. Apparently he doesn't know much about the game if he has a problem with someone going in hard to second to prevent the double play and score a run.

Having A-Rod's elbow hit his crotch will probably be the highlight of his mediocre career (though I do hear he's challenging David Eckstein in the "everyone's favorite little buddy" category).

Here's what A-Rod's or pretty much anyone else's response should be to Pedroia's comments.

"Hey rook...shut your mouth and play the game."

Case closed.

What a dumb shit. "That's it." Right. THAT'S all you have to do to seek your revenge on Alex Rodriguez.

What, all of a sudden the Yankees show a little moxie and the Boston players are shocked?

They've been pushing us around for the last 5 years - about time we pushed back.

Roght on, Pete. I hope this goes on the bulletin board and the team decides to get a bit pissy. Yanks need a bit of piss & vinegar.

If you don't know the difference between a tough slide and someone sliding then coming up with an elbow I don't know what to tell you.

"I hope this goes on the bulletin board and the team decides to get a bit pissy."

Arod gives a cheapshot and it's bulletin board material for the yankees? That's not exactly how it works.

On the bright side, between arod and giambi I think it's quite clear the idea of the yankees being the classy organization is out the door.

Are you even a Yankee fan?

I've seen the Sox do nothing but give "cheapshots" and pitch inside almost to the point of hitting people in the head--and actually hitting them in some cases. With the exception of Proctor, the Yankees have not established themselves as people who won't be fucked with. A-Rod's slide wasn't akin to the slapping of the hand that I cannot possibly condone. It was baseball.

"I’ve got to turn two with the Yankees 19 times a year..."

I guess that sounds a lot tougher than "I've got to turn two with the Yankees no fewer than four times a year, depending on the health and availability of Alex Cora."
