Farnsworth & Clemens

Peter Abraham is reporting that:

Kyle Farnsworth went on a Chicago radio station this morning and criticized Roger Clemens for his “family plan” agreement with the Yankees.

Just this morning, I heard Roger Clemens talking on the radio with Mark Patrick and Buck Martinez about his “agreement.” (Mark and Buck had Billy Connors on the phone. Billy said "The big guy just walked into the room." Then, Connors put Roger on the line...it seemed like a surprise to him. But, since Buck managed Clemens in the WBC, it seemed like Roger didn't mind being put on the radio, on the spot, like that.)

Clemens said that it was Houston who came up with the notion of the "free to travel or not" agreement, etc., when the Astros were trying to get him out of retirement. He implied that it was not his idea. Further, Clemens said that he spends most of the time away from the team working with kids, coaching, or doing charitable work - and it's not like he's sitting around the pool.

Farnsworth reportedly said "...part of the team you have to be there with the team." Yeah, I agree with that when you're talking about someone like Carl Pavano...pulling the "Summer of George" routine. But, Clemens is not Carl Pavano. Paul O'Neill, in his book, said that Clemens was a great teammate – and one that cared about you as a person. That's good enough for me.

I expect Farnsworth to get spanked by Torre for this move. Maybe he is saying what others players are thinking? Maybe not? But, just as Mussina was sort of spanked by Joe for commenting on Pavano in the spring, Kyle should expect to be doing a one-on-one with Torre soon - if it has not happened already.

Comments

Maybe the Farns wants to be traded away. Ryan Dempster just blew a four-run lead in the ninth against the Mets. Maybe the Cubs will take him back.

~~~Maybe the Farns wants to be traded away. ~~~
That was my first thought.
I'm with you guys.
Seems like a pretty stupid thing to say publicly given the position the team is in right now.
Another solid showing from Bobby so far today. 0-4 out of the leadoff spot.
I have a feeling that Farnsworth speaks for others.
If the next six games go 2-4 at best, my hunch is Torre or Cashman, or both, will be gone a week from today. If Cashman goes, my fear is we can wave goodbye to the farm system.
Anybody seen Alex? What is it, 3 RBI's in his last 20 games or so?
DeSalvo stunk it up today. First test against a decent hitting team didn't go well.
Yeah, what's with this lineup that Torre puts out there? Abreu's in a funk, a deep one, so why give him more at-bats than anyone else? They should consider a Jeter-Matsui-Posada front three, with A-Rod, Giambi and Cano/Abreu to follow. They need to do something to cluster the few guys hitting together to drive in some runs.
The Yankees got men on base today, and Garland looked hittable, but they simply couldn't get a big hit. It's been a very frustrating time offensively.
Very frustrating indeed.
If Erstad doesn't misplay a ball in CF in game two, this may have been a sweep.
I guess the logic is that since Jeter's doing so well, he'll be able to "protect" Abreu, and he'll be able to see better pitches... A crock, I know, but old baseball myths die hard.
When Kim Jones asked Torre about Farnsworth's comments, he seemed pretty pissed about it. I'm not sure if he was pissed at Farns or Kim Jones, but he was not a happy Torre.
I just love how everything is Torre's fault. Look at what's going on accross town w/ the Mets, Willie believes in his guys and is always using that word and I think he means it, as does Torre. One guy is winning, the other guy isn't. Some of you people are so fucking fickle, quiet when things are going good but the minute it goes bad you are ready to pounce and demand blood. Stay consistent at least.
Where the hell should he put Abreu? You can only put one guy in the 9 hole.
Maybe it's time the f'ing players start doing something. How about Matsui, ARod, should they be dropped too? I like how people just look at one player, then they start blaming Torre for putting said player in a certain position - i.e batting Abreu 1st.
Seriously, some of you guys are pathetic with your excuses and know-it-all answers. If it's so easy, call up Big Stein, tell him you know how to manage people and that you have the formula to get this team winning again.
You want an answer, maybe they all suck - Torre, Cashman, Jeter, ARod, Matsui, Mussina, Pettite, Wang, Mo, Matsui, even f'ing Clemens, ALL SUCK ELEPHANT BALLS.
But it makes perfect sense, it's Torre's fault. F-ing pathetic. Torre could put Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, DiMaggio, Mantle in the top of the lineup and the Yanks still won't hit shit.
April they were hitting everything. May they are pitching well but missing everything w/ the bats. Maybe in June it'll all come together like Voltron, till then...they just suck.
I'm just watching the games and trying not to get too pissed, but this constant Monday morning quarterbacking and having all the answers is just stupid at this point.
Not at the age they'd be now, if they were alive.
"Not at the age they'd be now, if they were alive."
I disagree. Babe Ruth was an overweight alcoholic. Watching him run is one of the funnier part of old footage. If he were alive, I bet he'd still be able to handle the bat quite well.
The precedent was set when he batted Rodriguez 8th when he was struggling.
