Cashman Admits Mistake On Marty Miller

From the Times: Yankees Fire Strength Coach:

A day after the Yankees’ baffling run of hamstring injuries claimed another victim in Phil Hughes, the team fired its new strength coach.

Marty Miller, who was hired last winter to the newly created position of director of performance enhancement, was let go on Wednesday, according to a Yankees official who was granted anonymity because the move has not been announced.

Miller, 34, was unpopular with some players, and several opted out of his program. Miller had not worked in baseball for 10 years before Cashman hired him last winter. His previous job was director of fitness at the Ballen Isles Country Club in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

Now, if it was only this easy to get rid of Pavano too......

There was a window of opportunity after the 2005 season as well as this past spring training.

Hey it may be me just dreaming but wasn't there some strength and conditioning guy doing a live blog this year? It couldn't have been Marty Miller... right? I feel like I saw you link about it Steve somewhere on this site.

Nevermind I just found it. It was the Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach, Dana Cavalea. Haha think its a coincidence that he removed his blog? I wonder if he got the axe also.

Cavalea will be the interim guy for now. He at least has been with the team for a few years in a part-time role.

I was just talking about this with, of all people, the secretary of the dean of my undergraduate college. She's a HUGE Yankee fan, and is always spot on when it comes to who is the one screwing up. She always has a Yankees calendar in her office, and I remember when in 2004 (the dreaded year) she covered the face of whoever was the person for the month of October--I think it was Matsui?--with a post-it because she couldn't bear to look at him.

Anyway--she's always known exactly what the correct next move has been--and she said this guy needed to go. Looks like she was right!

Is it piling on to say that this guy should never have even been permitted to THINK about what it MIGHT be like to be the Yankees strength and conditioning guru? Jeez, I mean, I did a few sets of curls once. What about me?

Really, this is the New York Yankees, not the UMASS Lowell River Hawks. The Yanks invest 180 mil. on a roster and then Cashman hires a glorified Bally's trainer to condition a roster full of world class athletes. Wow.

What amazes me is how one man - Cashman - can at times seem so brilliant and at others so outrageously dumb. NoMaas had a funny little narrative going on last year with Randall Johnson, the sucktastic alter-ego of Randy Johnson. One hopes they would be even handed and break out with a good parody of Cash.

Several prominent Yankees, including Derek Jeter and Jorge Posada, do not believe the team's sudden rash of injuries can be traced back to a change in the player's stretching and conditioning program.

"I don't think so," Posada said after watching Mike Mussina walk off the field with a strained left hamstring Wednesday night. "We're all adults here. We know what we have to do to get ready to play."

According to several players, Miller's program de-emphasizes running as a way to increase leg strength. He also took away the large rubber bands that Mangold used to help players stretch before games.

Some players have chosen to ignore Miller's methods, believing the lunges and other calisthenics he prescribes are too strenuous.
*****************
Mussina said he incorporates only some of the new program.

"It's different than it has been," he said. "Different ideas, different approaches to it. I would say it's unfair (to blame Miller). It could have happened no matter who was doing. It's ultimately our responsibility to make sure we're in shape. We all kind of did it in different ways. I'm not sure it's one particular thing."
