What's Happening In Moose's Neck Of The Woods

Mike Mussina, this spring, got most of his outs via fly balls. His ground out to air out ratio was 0.59 - one of the lowest marks for any Yankees hurler in camp this year.

Mussina usually is more of a fly ball pitcher. So, this is no shock. But, the key for Moose this year will be keeping those balls hit in the air inside the park. Note the following Homerun/Fly (HR/F) ratios for Mussina:

HR/F Mussina:
2004 13.10%
2005 11.90%
2006 11.00%

When Moose keeps his HR/F ratio closer to 11%, rather than in the 12-13% range, he's going to have a good season. If he doesn't, he's more like a league average pitcher - in terms of his relative end-result pitching performance.

As Yankees fans, let's hope that Mussina always has the wind at his back this season when he's on the mound. At the least, it can't hurt.
