I Really Do Miss This Man

Dave Buscema, with a Scooter update the other day -

Watching on TV: Phil Rizzuto watched his beloved Yankees on television from the retirement home he now lives in, reported his daughter Patricia. While some days are better than others for the Scooter, 89, Patricia said he remains active and enjoys sharing time with old friend and teammate Yogi Berra, who visits often.

Sad to think about Phil being in a home. It's more pleasant to remember better days:

From Cosmicbaseball.com -

And he hits one in the hole.
They're gonna have to hurry.
THEY'LL NEVER GET HIM!
They got him.
How do you like that?
Holy cow!
I changed my mind before he got there.
So that doesn't count as an error.

First inning, no outs, bases empty
Mariners lead 1-0

Classic.

I grew up listening to and watching Yankee broadcasts with Phil Rizzuto, Bill White, and Frank Messer. They were quite a team, almost like old friends to me after so many years.

Here is an article that I posted on Mark Feinsand's blog, so apologies if you already saw it. It deals with Phil's many superstitions as a broadcaster. It is funny and a good read. It also brings back great memories.

I never got a chance to listen to Phil - in my early 20s - and I really regret not having the chance to hear him make calls. From what everyone says, he truly was a good broadcaster, something that is hard to come by these days.

On a side note, I was wondering if you received your new Yankees game hat Steve? I remember you talking about doing a review of it and if its worth buying. I've been on the fence about getting one since I found out about the new hats. Thanks.

I associate my love for the Yanks with my love for Scooter and White (and the theme music from WPIX broadcasts). Nothing beat finishing my homework and sitting in front of the TV for Yankee games, watching Ricky, Donnie, Winfield (and even the great Pags).

BTW, Steve, I haven't given up on our project to get City Hall to work with the Yanks on finding a piece of land to name after the Scooter. Whitey Ford got his back in 2000 so Scooter should too.

themetssuck - yes, I just updated the entry on the hats with a new comment. You can see it by clicking on the cap photo on the main WW page.

Paul - great link. Thanks.

MJ, as soon as I read your post, I heard the WPIX Channel 11 music, complete with the "ding" and everything. Nothing could compare to the team of Scooter, Messer and White. I watched a replay of the Bucky Dent HR game on YES and heard them for the first time in many years. Listening to them again was the highlight of that experience. Commentary these days just pales in comparison. The one guy that I didn't like on national TV that I do like on local radio is Jon Miller. On ESPN, he's with Joe Morgan, and the whole thing is like a tribute to Joe Morgan, which is so overdone. But he also calls the Giants games on local radio in SF (KNBR) and he is actually a very funny and off-color guy. And he can do play-by-play along the lines of Frank Messer, who was a real pro, and a great foil for the Scooter.

Ah, Scooter, Bill White and Frank Messer. good times, good times.

Phil always seemed like a good friend you were with at the game -- talk about lots of things, especially canolis, and hey, there's also a ballgame going.
