Big Stein On Winny's Book

Dave Winfield has a new book out: Dropping the Ball: Baseball's Troubles and How We Can and Must Solve Them. According to Amazon, this is what the Big Stein had to say about it:

"Only a former ballplayer who possesses the astute ability to look beyond race, power, and money in confronting the long-term issues that are certain to continue to plague baseball could have written Dropping the Ball. Dave Winfield is such a former player. He offers up a solution in his Baseball United plan -- a plan in which we can all, in some way, contribute, thereby guaranteeing that baseball forever remains America's favorite pastime!"

-- George M. Steinbrenner III

Seventeen years after Howie Spira, things have changed, huh?

Wow, ol' George has mellowed.
(or is the senility setting in? Yes, that was a joke, and yes it was in very bad taste.)

To be honest, when I read these statements, I often wonder if The Boss is saying them or if Howard Rubenstein is saying them. The Boss never spoke in such flowery prose so I can't imagine that as an older man in increasingly more fragile health, he'd change his mode of speaking so drastically.

Either way, it's nice to see Winnie write this book. He always struck me as a player with a conscience so it's nice to see him staying involved in the game in the next phase of his life.
